Talk of Lachie Hunter moving from the Dogs to the Dees. Surprising. The Dees have a stacked midfield - he would have to compete for a spot. Plus, how can the Dees have their fingers in so many pies? It's a really different scenario trying to lure players to Sydney. All opinions are not equal. The AFL have given Gold Coast so many concessions over the years to keep them going. Most have been extra picks, which just end up at Melbourne clubs eventually.
Why couldn't the AFL make one more concession this time which would allow Bowes to stay on GC's list, like a limited salary cap concession. Or have the AFL pay part of Bowes contract so GC could make a market value trade for him. That would make a lot more sense then just throwing them extra picks which doesn't solve anything.
No club has been given the amount of access to top end players than GWS have, and look where they are after all of it..
The solution lies in finding a way for all clubs, and particularly expansion clubs, to pay a fair market wage to players and have the ability to retain players on an equal basis.
One solution to the go home factor is to allow a player that registers for the draft to declare that he is a Mummy's Boy. The AFL will set up a fund to facilitate the player's mother to visit frequently or even stay with their son if the kid is drafted to an interstate club. For example, the AFL will pay travel and living expenses for the mother. A player who does not make a Mummy's Boy declaration before the draft can never use the go home factor as a reason for switching clubs. An alternative would be a Mummy's Boy draft, just for these kids. They can go to the club they want, but paid the minimum wage until they grow up and can register for the regular draft as an adult.Comment

He's an elite winger and one of the few Dogs that run both ways. You'd grab him. I've always felt we should make Dylan Stephens watch his matches for what to emulate.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Maybe a few years back, but I think his last couple of seasons have been pretty ordinary. His kicking is a bit haphazard and he can be a bit of a stat gatherer at the expense of really having an impact. If Stephens needs a model (and I think that his two way running is probably where it needs to be already, or at least heading in the right direction), I reckon Ed Langdon is a better one.Comment

The chickens have come home to roost for the Bulldogs. I was wondering how they could afford such a stellar midfield plus the likes of Naughton, JUH and Darcy. It turns out something had to give and they have to let Lachie Hunter go for peanuts. Who are the peanuts now? But how is it that the top teams (Melbourne, Richmond, Geelong) seem to have the cap space to add in yet another good player that another team can't afford??All opinions are not equal. Every club gained new players from other clubs via trades or free agency.
The only clubs that did not lose players to other clubs were Richmond and Sydney."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

If I was a Hawthorn supporter I would be somewhat worried.
To lose Mitchell and O'Meara at the same time puts a big hole in their midfield. Dogs have lost a bit of midfield grunt too but they have greater depth than Hawthorn.
I'd be surprised if Hawthorn don't finish bottom 4.Comment

I hear you Ludwig but they only have picks 6, 24 and 41 of the early picks in the draft.
They would not want to stuff that up.
I forgot they lost Gunston too - admittedly a player with only a few years left, but Mitchell is gambling pretty hard I think.Comment

Hawks are creating cap space, which can go a long way if you take your chances. Look at some of the good player moves this year that went cheaply. They know they are years away from finals, so they might as well start cleaning out shop now.Comment

If GWS do the right think and bid on the best player in the draft at pick one, that will burn 2400 points, that's the entire Brisbane draft hand. Jaspa Fletcher will probably need another 8-900 points, hmmmm
Brisbane also won't enter the touted 2023 draft until mid 30's.
Media and people generally only look at player moves but you also need to look at teams draft hands this year and next year, some teams are very light on for both of those.
The undisputed big winner this year is Geelong!Comment

In the wash up Brisbane hold 7 picks totaling 2441 points.

I think Richmond have done ok, but with one big proviso - they'll need to start replenishing their tall stocks soon, and with Bolton coming up to free agency soon, they won't have the cap space to go get any externally and they've now got a limited draft hand.
The one I just don't get is Hawthorn. They've culled the list without bringing in quality, or a raft of draft picks. I get what Ludwig is saying re cap space, but cellar dwellars have shown themselves to struggle to recruit high quality FAs. At least West Coast has bolstered its draft hand for the next two years, which is appropriate for where they are at.
As for GWS, even old Kinnear has kicked them while they are down.

There's an article by Callum Twomey on the AFL site, about the trade period. In it, he has this observation when discussing the Bowes trade.
"That it was Geelong that could afford him was extraordinary given the club's premiership list, but nonetheless showed the value of the Cats' unique cap model."
I do wonder what he means by "unique cap model"? He doesn't elaborate, so hopefully someone will ask him to explain, on one of his media appearances.Comment
