It's interesting how vocal we have been about this to the media for some weeks now

There's a great opportunity to see clips of the top 30 prospects in the National Draft on the AFL website. I just viewed many of those mentioned on RWO and they all have certain attributes we have talked about. Worth a look. It's the top story on the AFL website as of now.Comment

I think there's nothing surer that we WON'T be drafting Josh Weddle with our first pick (if it's still at 14) as almost all the journo's phantoms have us selecting him and we almost never select the players they think we will! Lol.

a) we plan to trade in a KPF, perhaps next trade period. This plan looks even more on the cards if we trade first rounders out of this year into next strengthening our draft currency next year. We have a history of doing this and it makes a lot of sense. Assuming we have at least 2 first rounders to play with next year, who could we target? Would it bring one of the King twins into prospect? Who else is a top end youngish forward that might be coming out of contract??
b) we plan to move Paddy McCartin forward at some stage, perhaps in 2024 after Buddy's departure. As a former #1 pick who found good form in 2022, I think this is a real possibility and good option to have. I think we have said that our analysis is that Francis is best suited as a backman - so unless he demonstrates otherwise I'm not expecting him to play forward. I think we have invested too much in grooming Tommy McCartin as a KPD to move him back forward again. Besides, even from the moment he was drafted I thought he might wind up a backman because his goalkicking was not a strength - but he is very competitive and a good mark which I think make him well suited to the KPD role.
Mark my words.
The other thing that I would take from drafting two backs is that Sam Reid likely won't be retiring at the end of next season and we'll hang on to him a while longer. No reason he should either - he's not that old - he just needs to stay fit.
A final thing I would say about this draft haul is that it wouldn't look good for Melican and the pressure on Gould would also rise - high chance he could be traded out in 11 months.
Still, Cal Twomey (and the rest) could be completely wrong and we take some totally different players. Can't wait to see. It will be a bit anticlimactic if we trade out of the first round altogether - unless we get some very exciting picks traded in but I doubt they'd be that exciting. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Obviously we don't really rate this draft as we are clearly trying to trade out of it from all of the chatter. We seem to hear this year in year out with our recruiters talking about the draft having a "few top end talented players" and then it evens out.
We don't seem to ever be keen on drafting late first round or early 2nd round which is weird because 1, it's where we usually always end up, and 2, we don't have a bad record of late when picking from there (Matt Ling aside..).
I really hope we keep them unless we can move up this year as, while our future planning is obviously important, even though we were young and ahead of our time a bit this year we are clearly in the premiership window so let's go for it and try and bring in more talent now that may help us take that 1 step further next season!

Wonder if we’ll bid on Harry Rowston with one of our first rounders?
Given we’ve got 14 and 17 we could really mess up the Giants picks 15, 18 and 19!Comment

Lots of talk doing the rounds on other boards of our 14 and 17 being traded to Carlton for 10 and their future 2nd . Pretty close on points .
This could open up the likes of getting Hollands, Allan or Busslinger all players at some stage we have been linked to . Allan would be the one for me
Having said that we’ve being linked to every player bar the local orange boy , plus trading out both our picks to next years draft . This means once again the experts have no idea of what we intend to do.
Bring on Monday night I’ve got the popcorn ready.

Article in The Age today saids that we are interesting in several players that are also potential targets of the Giants. Given our picks are clustered with theirs, means it may be interesting. Players mentioned as common interests are Weddle, Brayden George and Konstanty. Barnett also mentioned for the second pick. Link below:

There are so many options this year, it's going to be up to KB to make the right decisions at the time. Anything is possible.
I wouldn't be looking at Konstanty or any small forward, as we have plenty of options there, with Gulden and Campbell likely to take at least one small forward spot simply because there's no spots in the midfield.
It would be nice to add some height as we will lose Buddy next year and probably Reid and Hickey a couple of years down the road,. Barnett and Keeler seem the best options.
Even though we have plenty of undersized key defenders, I really liked what I saw from Weddle in the couple of under 18 games broadcast this year. We could always move Blakey to another position; he can play anywhere.Comment

Especially with Bud moving on end of 2023.....in the words of KB "where do we find 50 goals"
There appears great upside in drafting a strong tall that can play either end
Last year we could blaze away at mids but this appears more of an opportunity cost vs goals required and replaced 2024 onwards....."be tough, only when it gets tough"
