I'm not optimistic that the players I'm most interested in will be there at our first pick (Busslinger, Allan, Jefferson).

I'd be happy to take a player like Hewett or George with our second pick. I'd also be happy to take Barnett or Weddle.

Basically I will completely back our recruiters in. Also happy to trade back or into the future for the right deal.

For a second I wondered if it was too silly to imagine GWS offering to swap 1st round picks with us (i.e. picks 14 & 17 for 15, 18 & 19!) - then I decided they wouldn't be silly enough to do that.

This draft drops off after first 10 or so, then it's an even draft through to around 30

Thanks for sharing the link, MW. Definitely informative for us to know the Swans' thinking although I am not sure why he is being so publicly frank? Trading down is an interesting strategy. I assume it means giving up something to acquire a pick in the 2023 draft, or going forward on one pick in 2022 and down on the other?

I can see us trading down on draft night, depending on who's available at our pick, e.g. if we really wanted Allen at pick 14, but he's gone, then we trade out that pick and move down the order.

If Keeler has dropped down the rankings to mid second round, we could trade down for a pick in the late 20s plus a future 2nd rounder. It could be any player; I just used Keeler as an example.

It could be a very strategic draft, given the picks we have. You never know if a club will be keen to get a player they like at our pick and would be willing to give up a lot of draft capital to move into position to get their player.

Also, I don't think just because we name a player that we are interested in that it will affect the drafting strategy for another club. Other clubs would be suspicious that it could be diversion tactic, just like we are.

I agree Dalrymple was asked about Weddle and Barnett but surprised when he then described them as being in a group of 6-8 we are seriously interested in.

He described the draft as having an elite top ten and then the next 20 or so being very even, so I can see why we’d be open to trading down.

I got the impression it’s too early to really judge the quality of the 2023 draft yet.

I must admit despite looking attractive the above scenario I personally would love to get my hands on talent at 14 to 17 and increase the probability of securing the players I desire most to join our squad

So close together and a genuine chance of cherry picking a need at pick 17 not just best talent [despite the line trotted out each season]

So many combos to play with but 14, 17, 35ish would be my preference if attainable

There’s a strong suggestion we’d swap 14 and 17 for Carlton’s 10 and a future something, which could bring players such as Jefferson, Allan and Busslinger into play.
