Ha. Did you know Mark Blicavs was also a former middle distance runner and steeple chaser? I rarely hear that mentioned.

Which was the ruckman that KB mentioned the other day with Riley and Cal that he said at a pinch could play snrs if required?

How many of them can play against a 203 cm monster forward, or kick 5 against a 201 cm monster defender ..... or competitively contest a centre bounce? Presumably the answer is more of them than I had thought. I don't remember Angus Sheldrick's vertical leap stats but I presume they were phenomenal.

Happy for the learned correspondents to explain to me what's going on here. I hope I am missing something that's obvious to others.

If it’s the one from Carlton, it’s still excellent. If the former, that notionally gives us 17, 25, 36, 44 and 55. That gives us a lot of license to get creative. If the right player was still on the board this year, we could even use on of those to trade back in above our third pick and trade it out.
We got the hawks pick, not the one tied to Carlton.

Allen could possible freed up have freed up Errol. Not looking forward to 2023 if this is how we are behaving. Forget about playing pay backs Dawson etc were in the past. WE need to look to the future. I think maybe we need changes to our recruiting staff. Beatson getting to old for the modern game and I dont know where Dalrymple got his experience from. Apologies i could not resist the theatre of saying we recruited another Sam Wicks with our first draft pick last night lol. Flammable on a high stakes poker draft night lol.

So...... did we get it right or did we get it wrong ?????

For me I assess the player we draft with a first pick vs other options that i sense could be ten year player......yes waddle allen etc could be....but u could easily argue just as hard that Konstanty will be if not more so. I realise for some that it didn't feel right last night "probably because he was described as a defensive small".......but if we can obtain a decent next player at 27 we never would have got Konstanty. If we achieve that tonight we are winning massively hands down.

So is Konstanty straight out a ten year player? You could argue yes. His "runway" as the Americans like to say ie latent capacity is a 9.9 out of 10 as a new comer to footy. He influences a game probably more so than the other options that we had true options for last night.

He is a VC already and a leader and as a newbie great effort. As we saw with Guldens influence on a game and we see with Tom Pap ......these guys upfront are game changers and Konstanty doesn't need to play as a defensive small. That maybe part of his role in his first 12months but as we saw with Gulden they can be so much more immediately and the next 9 of 10 years could be a true Paps type role as we know it now.

                  Vs

Did we just increase our scoreboard hurt factor which will be critical to be a top4 team in 2023....yes I think we did vs any other options available to us in an around lat teen picks.

                  Vs

Have we stacked our trades and draftees to provide the greatest probability of success when in a window for a GF? Vs say a Geelong and their trades and amazing Jye Clark draftee.......NO not even close overall and draft night is still part of this puzzle.

                  Vs

Does this player potentially free up another key player to take on a more advanced important role in our 22 and make our best 22 in 2023 even better? Yes Gulden and Paps even more game time thru the middle forward rotation and a cover if needed when injury strikes key play makers.

                  Vs

As we all noted immediately on this thread we appear to be stacking the 2023 seaeon for points and or trade options. Another massive tick in flexibility in this draft and or next for bettering our squad in 2023 and beyond.

I think I'll stop there lol

I love hearing you so positive AG!

I especially liked your "Did we just increase our scoreboard hurt factor which will be critical to be a top4 team in 2023....yes I think we did vs any other options available to us in an around lat teen picks."

I haven't known the term 'runway' before - so thanks for introducing me to that too.

A live pick trade was always on the cards. Sydney was looking to package up the two late first-rounders to move up the draft. That suggests the Swans were likely to use only one first-round pick. Trading down was also an option.

Twomey's phantom draft said Sydney was looking to trade up and down.

The AFL website had this article: Swans open to pick swap with seven young guns atop wishlist. It quoted KB: "We've no urgency to trade [pick 14]. We're really confident with the players there, but if a deal is put to us where we get back in the second round and we can significantly improve our position for next year's draft, we'd be mad not to look at it".

So it shouldn't be a huge surprise that Hawthorn made a phone call.

Konstanty should be a very good recruit. He's apparently stoked that he'll be playing alongside Papley.

I'm not going to complain about who we could have drafted with the pick we traded out. That would contribute nothing to the discussion. It's better to speculate on what we'll do with pick 27 and be satisfied with the 2023 draft points we got.

                      Remember: In KB we trust.

Perhaps we are expecting Francis or Gould to take over, and there's always Melican. Or is there a young Academy player who has similar talent and attributes to Weddle?

If they slide it’s a bonus, but it shouldn’t be expected.

The Swans are a professionally run organisation. They are not answerable to you, supporters or members. They make their decisions based (rightly or wrongly) on their perceptions of the best interests of the club. Sometimes they get it wrong. More often they get it right.

Supporters don’t have to pay for anything. We choose to.

Points-wise it’s significantly better next year when the draft depth is stronger and we’re more likely to get better players in the second and 3rd round. We’re also more likely to require points for our own academy kids. We knew we didn’t have any we wanted this year. I expect that we know there are ones we want next year.

The draft and recruiting is no longer about instant gratification - it’s as much about future planning as it is about who you take on the day. Good list managers are now worth their weight in platinum.

And it only takes second to check your spelling, punctuation and grammar. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But it’s not much fun having to use google translate to comprehend your rant.
Great post this one! My take on last night's action was that our list management team played it brilliantly, to the point that the AFL may once again change the draft rules on the back of the Swans' clever manoeuvring. Certainly the football media is abuzz with the craftiness of what we did.

Turing to our eventual pick, I think it was a good selection. Konstanty appears to have a lot to offer. Some teams last season played multiple small pressure forwards in their side so his selection could add an important dimension to our side. Two Papleys in the side sounds good to me!

As Swans supporters we always get value viewing on Draft nights. Without doubt we are the best strategists in the game. When we bid on the GWS and Adelaide targets we must have known that they wanted these players as cheaply as they could get them. It's called knowing the system. You could see by the look on the faces of the GWs group that they knew they had been gazumped. The bloke in the middle of the picture was clearly pissed off. We forced Adelaide's hand because they wanted a local product.

And all the time we had, at this pointed, targeted one player, Konstanty. It forced those 2 clubs to go early, particularly GWS who had a strong interest in the lad. He said in his interview GWS and Sydney were the most interested. This opened a clear path to our goal. With our first 2 tries we took up all our time but when it came to pick 20 we quickly snapped him up. Brilliant. We tried Bell, Wicks, Clark and to a lesser extent Ronke as small defensive forwards. Clark offered some goal scoring opportunities but the others dropped away. Here we have someone of the same ilk as Paps. Can't wait to see him in the red and white. Looks bloody exciting.

Onward to tonight. Will we spring some more surprises?
