I don't think the bid for Rowston was meant to screw the Giants, but rather it took the Giants out from taking Konstanty, who was likely to go with the pick they now had to use to match the Rowston bid, putting the Swans in a position to get their man with their second 1st rounder and free up the current pick for a trade.

So now we've turned the Dawson trade into 3 picks with a projected value of a pick 4. We will have to wait till next year to see how it all pans out, but with the moves last night, we got the player we wanted in the draft plus extracted the fair value for Dawson that Adelaide screwed us out of. It's funny how the Dawson trade has been stretched out over 3 years and counting.

I don't think there needs to be a rule change to counter what we did. I don't see anything wrong or untoward about it. We are also not the first club to bid on a player, then trade out the pick.

I am one of those who thinks we need to add more height to our list, so didn't think Konstanty was a player we should be targeting with our first pick. But seeing how things unfolded, I could hardly imagine a better outcome. In retrospect, we tried Wicks, Ronke, Bell and Clarke in that defensive forward role, but none really gave us the total package we were looking for and now hoping that Konstanty will be the one who will give us that 2 way small forward.

We are likely to take Will Edwards as a Cat B rookie, so that's one tall KPP to be added to our list. We still have 3 more picks to go. Even if we don't take a tall with pick 27, there are a number of prospects that should be available at pick 40.

PS: Nico must have been reading my mind while I was typing. I'm going to try just thinking about posting something, then wait and see what Nico does. I could be on to something here.

"It was probably as we predicted and we knew there was going to be a bit happening," said National Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple.

"We were really well prepared through Chris Keane, who did a lot of the preparation work in terms of scenarios and trades on the run.

"We're really confident we can get the same type of player that we would rate at picks 15-18, at 27."

        Good points.

I thought it was the most exhilarating draft night EVER!

I think Chris' statistics degree may have included a unit or two on game theory. The Hawks pick swap, which grew out of eliminating the Giants pick. Even the Adelaide F/S bid was probably a way to provide the time to get the Hawk deal done. A grade.

Whilst most of us are happy, I am thinking the Hawks supporters would be spewing.

If the Hawks finish 10th (probably what they aspire to), that is pick 27 and 45 next year and this year’s 27 for pick 18 this year (after the four matching bids). That is already bad for them.

If they finish bottom four, it could be 22 and 40 next year (or better) plus their 27 for an 18. If they finish last, then we get 19 and 37 next year and 27 this year, for our 18.

Essentially the Hawks would have given away two pick 27s and a 37 for nothing!

No, but there are enemies and there are non enemies. The Victorian clubs are our enemies, not GWS.
The northern academies are our lifeblood. Any stuffing around of pathways for NSW born kids to get to Sydney should be avoided. Both NSW teams are compromised in the draft because there is a significant number of player who refuse to move here.
We made GWS pay a higher price for a 'local' kid. They have to pay higher prices for all the other kids too. I would hate it if they returned the favour in the coming years. Totally unnecessary.

Maybe we just rated him that highly too. The other stuff was for fun. This gives some further insight - and for those who can't get past the paywall:

                - KB rang GWS with an ultimatum - you either pay with a draft pick this year, or next
                - He first sought the first round pick tied to Richmond next year in exchange for swapping for 16 and 20 so GWS could get ahead of the bid
                - Or give us your last two first round picks this year for 16.

And people think we're often soft touches in draft and trade periods!

Sydney would have been happy to take Rowston . After all he is an All Australian midfielder

Very necessary.....because we wanted someone they wanted and had a chance to get before us...and instead, we got him. It worked a treat and I'm sure GWS understand the 'biz'....and if they don't, they learnt a lesson for future use. They are not the main enemy but they are not our friend either.

GWS started draft night with four picks inside the top 20 (1, 15, 18 and 19) and a list of players they wanted to draft. They ended up with four picks (at slightly different positions due to matching) and most of the players they wanted.

I doubt they would worry too much.

Certainly the football media is abuzz with the craftiness of what we did.
I doubt there would be much of a rule change. Carlton did the same thing a few years ago.

The only rule change that might be considered would be extra time to allow live pick swaps to be completed. If so, such stalling tactics would not be necessary.

They were forced to use a first rounder on Rowston and lost access to Weddle and Konstanty … which means they now probably use pick 19 rather than trade it into next year …

other than that it all went according to plan for them

GWS lost a fair bit of value. They would have hoped to use (now) pick 34 on Rowston, with the 4 higher picks being 'live' picks. But now pick 34 becomes the live pick, instead of pick 16.

Nonetheless, you're probably right that they are not too bothered by it. It won't make much difference in the end; they'll all end up in Melboune in a few years anyway.

We were pretty tough on the Giants with the ultimatum, but knowing what we could get for the pick from Hawthorn, it was a fair ultimatum, albeit a pricey one. Even though we didn't get a first rounder for the Hawthorn swap, the points value will likely end up better.

I hope someone above Essendon bids on Davey, just to wipe out their pick and in effect, move us up a spot and open up the pool of remaining players to us.
