Match Thread Match thread. THE GRAND FINAL!!! Swans v Cats.

Weather forecast is around 14°, mainly fine, with little chance of rain. Wind a moderate but cool 20kmh southerly. Seems a perfect day to run Geelong off their feet.

Campbell is warming up with the team, so it looks like he's the medisub.

I'd forgotten about the picture quality on 7, are they broadcasting in better quality on another channel?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

If it's on Channel 7 then try the HD channel 70. If it's on 7mate then the HD channel is 74.

A few random thoughts on beating Geelong. Firstly, don't do what Brisbane did last week. I thought they were very predictable in attack, constantly kicking straight over the man on the mark and straight ahead hack kicks out of contests. They hardly moved the ball laterally or changed the angles of attack. That more or less reduced the dimensions of the wide MCG to the much skinnier Kardinia Park. Consequently, Geelong where able to comfortably set up behind the ball and constantly swat away attacks.

To compound the problem, they didn't seem to have the energy to chase Geelong when they switched it to the fat side. The tracker showed that the aging Geelong outran them 275.8km to 270.3km. Consequently, Geelong never seemed to be under much pressure when attacking.

I don't think either of those things are going to happen today. We have outran our opponents in the majority of games this season, especially the wins. And for many years now, we've been recruiting for athleticism. Conversely, Geelong's opponents have been outrunning them for most of the year. So, it's not too hard to imagine Geelong switching the ball for space, only to find our runners already in that space and applying pressure.

Additionally, we have plenty of highly talented ball users; so I don't think we'll be predictable in attack. Which was noticeable when I went back and watched our early season victory against them. We were very good at constantly changing the angle, depth and speed of our attack, and Geelong never really looked comfortable in defence. Nor did they look great in attack, because even though it didn't appear to be that much of a high pressure game, our superior pressure did force them into error.

So, even though they have improved since then, I still think those basic things apply. That is, use our athleticism to apply pressure all over the ground, further use that run to create space when we have the ball, and use our ball skills to constantly put it where the Geelong players aren't.

Yes, probably wouldn't want to spend the game being tagged by Jared.

By the way, the official final teams are Holmes out for Geelong, being replaced by O'Connor, with Parfitt the medisub. While Campbell is our medisub.

And after noticing the umpires for the first time, I do hope that they've noticed, that Paddy McCartin is the real fairytale of this grand final.

Still feeling oddly confident. More fired up than nervous.
