With Mills and Papley to be included in best 22, who misses out (given the extended bench last night)?

On the Franklin McDonald discussion, I noted the latter took the majority of his possessions up the field/on the wing; Buddy was very much in the forward 50
I think Cunningham is the sub.

      Ah, that's better :-)

Disappointed in Gulden, failed to break the 50 possession barrier! Just remember, passed over by almost every club when he slipped to pick 32 because he was too short, but that won't stop the academy haters in Victoria from complaining about the academy rort

Ladhams performed as a lead ruck should despite being bashed about. McAndrew for a recent AFL convert looks very promising. Not concerned now about ruck stocks.

McDonald has put on serious muscle and got himself a serious haircut. Really liked his work last night, developing nicely.

Campbell looked good, too much talent to not be best 22, just needs to settle into a role.

Blakey, good to see him running around after his brush with glandular fever.

Chad, hope he's not drinking the bathwater, needs to think a little more about when to try the impossible

Looking positive for R1 against our nemesis Gold Coast

What I loved about Ladhams (besides the look of a guy who's got something to prove) was much more willingness to handball to better ball users and much more effort to get to more contests.

As I said after the Lions game last week, Erol has become very important to us - surely he has serious midfield minutes awaiting him?

As others have noted, McDonald worked hard up the ground for his kicks and eventually got the appropriate reward - he keeps working like that, he'll have an excellent year. Same same for Campbell - as 707 noted above, it just feels wrong if he isn't in our best 22.

Rowbottam, Warner and Stephens all had quietish first halfs (reckon Chad got caught more in the first half than he did all of last season!) but all kept working hard to eventually have a significant impact.

That work rate and willingness to do the un-glory things are great signs post that last game they played that we don't need to talk about anymore.

Buddy is still in training, so hard to say if or when he will be back to his usual game. It's also hard to say if he can ramp up to round 1 in the next 2 weeks. In any case, I would go with just 2 tall forwards, Logan and Reid, with Bud as an option for sub.

Reid and Logan looked okay as a KPF pairing, albeit nothing that will dominate a game.

Overall the team looked sharp and ready for round 1. It was a big improvement from last week.

Don't care too much for pre-season games but it was nice to see some cohesion. Agree on everything others have already said but I'll add a couple of things:

            1. I was particularly pleased to see that Braeden had the most time on ground for our team indicating that his "tank" is improving.
            2. I thought McInerney showed glimpses of his best if not getting the numbers he is capable of.

I have been in and around Chiang Mai for the last 4 weeks enjoying the company of old mate Ludwig. We watched the game at his salubrious digs at an outer suburb called Mae Tang.

              Some observations:

Campbell: If he plays that role of drifting through the middle then he will be a weapon.
Gulden: looks like he is going to play midfield or is that all over the field.
Chad; he looked a little rusty and seemed to call for the footy in tight situations. It looked like an opposition player was playing close to or even tagging him. He slowly worked into the game.
Blakey: got better as the game went on.
              Heeney looked to be coasting.
Reid: he kicked straight for goal.
              Rankin looked ok.
              Ladhams looked darn good.

Overall it was a pretty even performance all over the ground. I thought we set the tone early with pretty strong tackling that upset Carlton.

Both the Oracle and I agreed we have pretty good depth.

Sadly, tomorrow I will drift back to Phuket for a couple of weeks and watch Round 1 at the Aussie Pub at Kamala Beach.

For me what stands out is the number of players in our team that have continued to evolved their attacking short to medium length kicks.

For me it is still our greatest strength vs the competition ie we have more in our team than others that can thread the needle under high pressure and or congested areas in the field.

19th picture, Buddy going for a one armed mark, presumably because his other arm is pinned by the Carlton player hugging him around the chest while facing away from the incoming ball. Blatant free kick…

                        Did the ref call it?

No call on that one and Buddy let the ump know he didn't agree

Gee Mal, it will be a very long season if we start on umpires this early. We've never had luck with the men in white. That's what makes our successes so much more enjoyable..
