I think I posted it in the match day thread in response to someone suggesting we rest players next week.

He (Rankin) was just moved forward for the last quarter. I think he played on the wing for much of the game.

Konstanty not ready for 3 qtrs at least?

Or could a Warner junior jump on and do a Brandon Jack debit game 4 goals ????

I think we have enough firepower up forward to win without Papley there. I’m more concerned we’re going to miss him at the centre bounces and his ability to get us going there

I agree, Horse said we missed him in Q4 of Saturdays game when we got killed there. Would it be crazy to try and give the Lizard a run in there? He causes mayhem with the ball in hand!

It would be crazy to move Blakey from defence, IMO. He was outstanding all game, but especially in the final quarter when we were being bombarded. And with no McCartin, his spoils and intercepts become even more crucial.

I do agree with Ugg that it's Papley's centre bounce work that will be missed most if he's unable to take his spot next week. When Sheldrick suffered his injury I was disappointed for him but didn't think it would have much impact on us given we looked highly likely to miss finals. But what we'd give for him to be available right now (ideally as well as Papley, not just as a replacement).

But regardless of where we'll miss Papley the most (if we are to miss him), we still need a body to come into the team. Hopefully McInerney is available. There isn't much else to pick from. Konstanty and Hall-Kahan did nothing yesterday to indicate they are ready for a debut. Warner was the liveliest around the middle of the ground. It wasn't his best performance of the season but was much better than last week. And Rankin was pretty good all day, working hard along the wings before he went forward. But it would be a bold move to debut him right now.

I thought Clarke looked like he played a quarter in the rain the night before and then jumped on an early flight, while Roberts plodded with little obvious impact from the vantage point of the Lakeside boundary. Mitchell tried hard but didn't do anything to make me take notice. Magor was decent, though it wasn't as good a game as his one against the Suns last week.

Liz, I share your high hopes in Sheldrick. It’s such a shame he got injured as I could see him blossoming under finals pressure.

In terms of Paps CBA replacement, I was trying to think of explosive players without too much regard to the consequences of moving them from their former position.

Another that came to mind was Campbell. Maybe Heeney?

Assuming they need to be available next week I can’t think who else?

I’m assuming Buller and Amartey will both be unavailable up forward and McCartin down back. If one of them was available Francis could play back. Although I thought Melican played out of his skin before he got injured, again. I presume he’s available now?

Sure, Campbell is a good option to attend the occasional centre bounce. Even though he's always been more of an outside player, he attended plenty at academy level, where him and Gulden were an effective one two punch. I vaguely recall him kicking a few goals directly from the bounce.

At around the same time, largely due to a long injury list, Wicks was playing as an inside mid in the NEAFL. While his forte was topping the tackle count, he was capable of a dynamic clearance or two. So, he might be another option lower down in the rotation.

If you look at the breakdown of the CBs (as Longmire loves to call them now) in the last few weeks,

                      CBAs - DFS Australia

in terms of covering for Papley we don't need to look at unorthodox options such as Campbell or Heeney. Rowbottom and Warner have had very low CB attendances in the past 2 weeks, they could easily slot back in there. Mills had a season high 88% on Saturday, because he was tagging Dawson and with 2 possible tagging targets in Oliver or Petracca he could be retained in the middle.

This is true. But if you want a wildcard option, we should be looking at McInerney. I'm still obsessed by his centre bounce prowess, because the two times Horse trusted him in there, he won games for us against Norf in 21 and the Bombers last year. I'd only do it in a pinch hitting role, but we should definitely do it for a bit of variety and spice.

Agree on Sheldrick - his last block of games convinced me he's a long term mainstay of our centre square crew. He wasn't even in the injury report last week, suggesting he's a while off.

Nice suggestion re Campbell! Errol had some cracking contested possessions late and we'll likely lean on him a little more.

They declared him as "season over" almost straight away.

Yeah, but based on a season of what length..?

Clutching at straws a little, but holding out a minuscule of hope.

I may be wrong, but I thought McInerney has already been ruled out for next week
