Sorry to be pedantic, Auntie, but schneller Kartoffelkopf means „fast potatohead“ (as in quick, not as in German “almost”). As a wraith who wrote in German, I apologise, but couldn’t let it pass.
Nevertheless, totally agree we’ve been tremendously proactive this draft and trade period. An eye to the future as well as the here and now. Personally I’m very happy with the club’s moves, and really looking forward to seeing all these boys in the Red and White.

Hopefuilly either Arnold or Snell will develop to form a great backline much as the 2 macs were headed, Its now time to turn our attention to find future replacements for ramps (a strong kicking half back) and a strong boied inside mid (like JK) for future to follow Parks and Adams.

It was a typo and was supposed to be “fast”

It is the nickname for my son when he was little lol ????

But Patrick is “fast” hence the play on words with his surname

3 seconds even on the 20m sprint at the combine was nice an quick for a 194cm player.

His running style reminded be of AJ ie how hunched and forward leaning the both are when anticipating the ball or changing direction

The best part was that he looks strong already for a tall and may develop quite quickly in a full time environment.

Another phantom draft out today has us taking ruckman Will Green at pick 16, who is ranked at 23.

Interestingly KPD Ollie Murphy didn't make this top 28 but is linked going to Geelong. If we did trade our 12 for North's 17 & 18, then it becomes feasible to obtain both Green & Murphy?

Article also suggests Pies are keen on Cleary but bid likely won't come till their 2nd selection.

Also suggests we'll draft Indhi Kirk (son of Brett) as a Cat B rookie.

Just goes to show the couch potato that I am come draft night, compared to the club which does ongoing extensive scrutinising! We did in the end draft ruckman Will Green and a KPD in Patrick Snell, using picks 15 & 53 compared to 17 & 18 for Green & KPD Ollie Murphy, the latter who slid to pick 41!

At the time I was perplexed why we'd overlooked defender James Leake for ruckman Green, when I thought a defender was our greater need. So much so, even contemplating whether Green could be developed into a KPD instead!

Also shows it pays to wait till end of the draft to make final judgement, as our final haul of a developing Ruckman, inside Mid and KPD looks good on paper. Like with all the other draftees taken, time will tell of the quality selected.

Fox sports article was spot on with Pies making bid on Cleary (earlier than expected). Interesting to see of their prediction we will draft Indhi Kirk as a cat b rookie today.

I’m also keen to see GC have success. I certainly get why the academies are there, and absolutely support taking multiple academy players a year, but I just think 4 at the pointy end is taking things a bit far.

As someone pointed out every Academy kid we develop frees up another Vic kid to be drafted by Vic teams. The other point is; WE DEVLOP THEM NOT THE AFL. WE DEVLOP THEM, DO YOU GET THAT? WE PAY, WE HIRE THE STAFF, WE TAKE FULL REAPONSIBILITY. NOT THE AFL. EVERY OTHER DEVELOPMENT PATH IS PAID FOR BY THE AFL.

Even the Victorian schools program which the AFL puts $millions into. Mainly into private schools mind you. That is why with only 25% of students they make up 75% of AFL players.

Yes they did. He got injured and only ended up playing 7 games before retiring

You are of course correct in what you are saying, but the same Victorian Clubs never complain about the huge advantage they have when it comes to father/ son academies that they all run. For some reason that is considered different!!!
The fact is you get swings and roundabouts in both.
I suspect the thing that irks the Victorian clubs most is the success of the academy’s is making it more difficult for them to raid the northern clubs

Yes and the Next Gen academy rort that they bvirtually do nothing to develop but got free access

I don't know many of the squad defenders you've mentioned - I hope we've found a few gems in there, but take little comfort that when we were devastated with injuries in that part of the ground, none of these players got a run. And then the club felt it necessary to recruit a(nother) journeyman defender in the off-season.

Time will tell I guess.

Arnold was drafted in the mid season draft during the period we started to get players back. Hamling was traded in the Trade Period. vickery is not a key defender he is s flanker, we did not have flank injuries. Edwards is a first year project Key defender out of the Academy who was definitely not ready

+1 from me Wolftone57. I was saying same years ago to my Vic mates when they were making cheap shots at our academy, but I've now given up as they refuse to get it, just like most of the footy media. I even recall Eddie once saying there are too many spuds in the AFL, so the academies can only improve the playing pool!

Glad to hear the likes of Gerard Healy defending the Academies, when he shot down Kane Kones proposal of Northern Clubs not able to match 1st round bids, after GC had matched 4 x 1st round Academy bids. The same rule would need to apply for F/S. Can you imagine the outcry from the Pies not able to match bids for the Daicos bros & Moore!!!

I was even surprised to hear Julian DeStoop on SEN strongly defending the Northern Academies with Andy Mahr yesterday, who was proposing some sort of change. Just so reactionary after GC matched 4 x 1st round bids.

I think if you develop the players you should get access to them. How many players in the Victorian pool are developed by the clubs? I'll tell you how many. NONE. They all come through the schools program which is paid for by the AFL. A lot of Vic kids now say they refuse to go interstate. Is that fair? At least 10% now say that.

I've been rehashing that, and other talking points, for years. Nothing gets through.

I think fans from the football states underestimate (or ignore) the role that the school system has on starting to develop footy skills and nous. Particularly at the private schools that dole out footy scholarships, there is more often than not an ex-AFL player on the staff as footy coach. And often very good ex-AFL players. Most of the equivalent schools in Sydney don't even offer AFL as an option, and those that do don't apply any resources to it.

So this idea that only players who wouldn't otherwise have chosen AFL should be eligible for the academies is silly. Without access to quality coaching and regular competition against similarly talented and motivated players throughout their development years, these players won't get close to AFL level living in Sydney. And that goes for Nick Blakey as much as for any of our other graduates.

We even have junior teams kicked off their ovals because of arseholes. We have councils that are in the pockets of Soccer Aus & NRL. Just getting somewhere to play let alone state govt or councils spending money on development, even with AFL subsidies, is difficult or almost impossible

I think the inside mids are already there. Roberts is that same size as Joey. While Cleary fits the Parker mould nicely. Hard as nails.

Gold Coast have done the AFL world a solid by developing and drafting the only 4 players they've added to their list this week. We only took one player (well arguably two) out of the general player pool. So all the other clubs have had better access to the great majority of players, with fewer teams competing for that pool of players.

Maybe what some Melbournites are moaning about is that they don't have a crop of players drafted by a team like the GC that can be given a few years development, allowing the Melbourne clubs to assess the wheat from the chaff, then lure the pick of them 'home'.
