The Dee bloke has played one game! Got a mark on out his own when they created the loose man, got a dodgy free ten metres from goal in a ruck contest with Mensa, got an even dodgier HTB against Paddy and took a mark when he had the running jump over that physical monster Rowbottom who was trapped under the ball. He did OK but let’s not label him the next Wayne Carey.

I don’t. There’s a difference between saying one of our players does stupid things, and labelling them with a nickname that infers they are stupid.

I get coming up with nicknames for players on other teams or the umpires, but I would much prefer to call out poor performance/effort by our players without giving them derogatory nicknames.

He has played one game, our guy hasnt been given a good crack due to injury etc.

1000 examples of guys that had a good first game or year and ended up being nothing
I think Luke Vogels would be a prime example. 4 goals in his first game and then produced very little before being de-listed 11 games later.

Heath Grundy also kicked three on debut. Sure, he eventually turned into a good player. In defence. After another couple of seasons alternating between NEAFL and the senior team, trying not to get in the way of Barry Hall.

Or Ben Ronke, who kicked seven in his third game.

I do like the look of Van Rooyen, not just based on Sunday's game but also on his performances against us at VFL level (albeit in a dominant side). But I agree that it's far too soon to declare anyone a hit or a miss (by other clubs) in the draft.

I wasn't suggesting he is the next Buddy but he did get selected over their regular KP in McDonald who is fit and healthy. Must say something about him.

Apparently it was his nickname at Port.

And Cheese Barlow. After his first game (against Brisbane I think) people were declaring him the next Adam Goodes.

I preferred the "Punchless Ed" nickname.

Regarding Heeney: I know that photos often lack context and angles can be deceiving, but images 65-68 in this gallery are interesting.

I find it disappointing these photos were posted on the Swans site. Not necessary nor conducive to player loyalty.

I agree with The Big Cat's assessment of Roo - may be a good footballer but the excitement levels based on that performance are out of proportion. Their kid who I was impressed with was Chandler - he did a lot right.
