That’s footy folks. It was a massive improvement on last week .
I agree....as Horse said, we just stuffed up some things at the end. I have no doubt we'll improve in certain areas as the season wears on, including 4 quarter fitness. Last year we got stronger as the season progressed....but couldn't sustain it in just those last 6 quarters of the season.

Plus I'm going to lower ladder position expectations to avoid ongoing disappointment just in case we don't improve. I do worry about what's going on between our players ears. Hopefully they remain strong in that area.

When the ball hit the ground up forward our small forwards or any forwards were not sighted. GWS had players swarming at the ball and took it away with consummate ease. 22/9 centre clearances in our favour for once, but the ball kept bouncing out.

I don't see the sense in bringing in a mid and playing him on a HFF, when he has had a poultice of the footy in the 2's. It just crucified the lad.

AB I think luck does play a part

I think equally true is that luck is a minor part of how we lost after being 3 goals up with not long to play. Many other areas playeda bigger part than luck.

Even our team today had enough experience and talent to ice that game.

          We didn't adjust ...... no plan B

We appeared to be quite confused how to handle the turnover traps that the GWS Giants set for us.

            So, a few thoughts:

            We did a lot right.

            * Our contested ball was a mile better, and kudos to Parker for his best game of the season. Chad was very good, and Gulden worked better one step removed from the source. He’s still going to win a lot of ball, and contested ball, but he’s not being shoved under the contest.

            * Ladhams. It’s easy to forget he only has 50 odd games of AFL experience, and he played half as a forward when at Port. He’s got tricks, good hands and he will keep getting better. He was a good recruit and it’ll be of lasting value to us as we come into our peak.

            * It’s the best I’ve seen Logan and Bud combine. Logan was very good, and Buddy was right into it.

            * Hayward. He works as hard, often selflessly, as anyone, and got some rewards tonight.

            Some downers:

            * Inside 50s. We win them week after week. But use them poorly, and it’s not all about being too Buddy conscious. Our inability this year to hit a sharp 30m kick does my head in.

            * Clarke and Francis. I’m sorry, as I know Clarke works hard and is disciplined. But, I could count at least four occasions where his inability to give the first or quick disposal give the opposition the half second they needed to force a turnover and sweep it downfield. Half seconds matter at AFL level. And Francis lacks the athleticism needed for the modern game. We might be stuck with him for now, but he moves like a freight ship.

            * Lapses. It wasn’t just the handover from Ollie to Campbell at that last stoppage that we mucked up. No one stood Himmelberg in a rucking contest in the second quarter and he’s free to kick it forward to Cadman who goals. Or when Flynn gets a free at the 50 and no one thinks he’ll give it off to Cogniglio.

As for fitness, I see the manifestation a little different, and that’s a lack of surge running. I mean blokes going on hard, relentless 100m runs that break their opponents. Think that game against the Pies late last year (not the final) when Heeney and Buddy combined for that late goal. Heeney burned two or three blokes from the wing to the goal square before his tap to Bud. Who’s doing that this year?

Hard agree. I’ve banged on about this. We desperately needed a friend for Paps, who’s the defensive contrast to his offensive work.

I hope so. You look at the work Close does for Geelong or McCreery for the Pies, or Spargo did for Melbourne in their flag year. It’s work defensively inside 50 and genuinely hard running up between the arcs, both sides of the ball.

The sky isn't falling in - I'll put that one down to a lot of the luck falling GWS's way. We shouldn't have lost that one, but they had a lot go right for them - including a couple of umpiring calls in the last couple of minutes which were ultimately telling.

Still doesn't paper over the fact that the GWS folly has been a massively expensive fail for the AFL, that they have a woeful culture, and the big Melbourne clubs continue pick the eyes out of their talent who want to go and play for a real club. Regardless of how well they do on field, they're nobodies.

We're fighting through a slump, its just too bad we have the Pies next week.

GWS are no slouches this year. There are still plenty of big names in there.qnd there game style is coming together. Kingsley is a fitness nut, so they are very fit Simple fact is we are undermanned which means until we get full strength again, every game is vunerable.

Wow, you must know more than I do. I was under the impression we had to give up first round picks for Heeney, Mills, Blakey and Campbell, and an early second rounder for Gulden.

Two points from four very gettable set shots in the second quarter cost us the game, they should never have been close enough to beat us. Our inaccuracy, their accuracy and some lucky toe pokes beat us.

We are a depleted team with a long injury list. Might be the year we go backwards before moving forward again.
Good post. We’re not the first team to lose after poor kicking for goal, and we certainly won’t be the last. But we essentially lost the Port match because of poor conversion as well.
