In almost every part of society we are seeing more expectation around respect for our fellow woman and man.

The treatment over decades and centuries for minority groups or groups of people without a voice was harsh. Beyond harsh !

I get it that in Roman times and you hard worked an 18 hour day........ hands bleeding.....starving...... you had to find something to get excited about. Jeering, booing, screaming going nuts to keep sane probably seemed almost reasonable at the time.

I also get in decades gone past it was a lot fun to stir up the crazy characters of the game. It was a spectacle at so many levels.

In decades gone past I used to laugh my head off at the crowd calls as there were quite often (99% of the time) hilarious !

The likes Dermie, Jacko, Leigh Matthews, Barry Hall, Tony Shaw, Bhudda, BT, Toby Greene ie the players of Mongrel loved to play the evil one and many seemed to love to engage the crowd at different stages of their career.

So yes there is a legacy of fun days that didnt appear to be cruel but there was always a 1% that ruined some peoples lives.

There was a pile of times, through those decades, were some players were absolutely punched down and the worst of the worst was said by some sideline heroes hiding in the pack.

HIDING on the edges of people just having fun.

There comments, weak comments that wouldn't be said to the face of that athlete. Spineless, racist comments. Not met with affection and sadly a lot of us probably just went silent rather than speak up in front of a raging crowd.

These people that hid have been challenged and rightfully so. Exposed !

I mean you cant boo at the footy.........really?..........that really isnt a problem, is it ?

    NO........its not !

      Im with you here
Racial abuse aside, i cant see anything wrong with it, and as we saw with Goodes, the more you complain the worse it gets.

It was a badge of honour, they dont boo no names.

Good with the bad, on another note, if Gulden was attacked like Daicos was, the forum would be lit up with calls of foul play.

I agree. I was disappointed and annoyed by that childish and ineffective roughing-up of Daicos. For no other reason than that he is an excellent player and has been a key part of Collingwood’s success this year.

Our players just wasted energy. And ensured an inevitably hostile opposition crowd became a venomous one. I think the rough-up was the genesis for the subsequent booing (certainly of Papley).

Plainly stupid tactic. I had thought our club was better than that.

Agree. Unusual for the club to carry on like that. Maybe it just got out of hand.

            Ditto. Energy-sapping nonsense.

Energy the players needed in the last quarter when they ran out of legs.

I am puzzled why our fitness levels seem down this year. Is it a flow-on from injuries to key players meaning more younger, less experienced players are playing?

When I heard the booing it didn't register with me as rascist. I was at a Collingwood final when Goodes was booed. A big pies crowd is a living beast in the concrete stadium of the MCG. I was also at a Port Adelaide game when Franklin was booed too. My sister as a PA follower (poor thing) was disturbed that it would just fire up a champion. Feral footy. I have enjoyed a good booing myself at times. Best for the media to let it slide a week or two unless it becomes a 'thing'.

And yes the Daicos thing was over the top. Inexperience of the young players?

No definitely not. Papley doesn't want to be associated with Joffa. He pleaded guilty to luring a minor to his home for sex. Absolutely disgusting human being.

Why don’t they rotate more players through the midfield? Put Parker in the forward line for two CBA and put Hayward in to get him involved.

Florent used to play a lot in the midfield too, so stick him in the guts for a couple of CBA.

I don’t get why they use the same players over and over in the midfield or on the ball who then get tired, when other players could share the load at various stages of the game.

Many of Parkers disposals are random hopes. I noted 3 handballs in a row in the 3rd that went nowhere to end up with a Pies player. Hayward might be a good option sometimes, but maybe Parker has lost that high extension extraordinary hangtime

And could you think of a better dress choice, if you genuinely wanted to send a feral mob into an apoplectic rage?

I'm sure the club will work on the crap kicking, the apparent lack of 4 quarter fitness can't be fixed overnight but we won't be playing top 4 teams every week so there are better times ahead this season.

I think next year our expectations should be higher.....we will be fitter (we better be!), Bud will be gone so our forward structure will improve as well and the young guns will be a year bigger and stronger. We may well be bullying teams from next year onwards.

As for the umpires, they are who they are.....we can only hope they get their heads out of their Victorian arses and improve.
I'm glad you've managed to read all the posts Stevo, I wonder if you can manage to watch the game and let us know if some of the skills on display were of AFL standard? [emoji6]

But . . . I'm curious at Buddy being booed worse than Papley - which I understood given earlier events.

And I'll always remember a really good line from Brendan Goddard during the Goodes saga, when he said (to paraphrase): I think it's racially motivated and horrific; but if you don't want to accept that, then you're bullying someone on a national stage, which is just as bad.

The simple fact is this is Bud's last year. There is no player in my 30 years of watching AFL who's brought as much pure joy to the game and fans as he has. Crowds should stand, applaud and bow before him for the rest of the season - and simply say thanks.

I think there is some booing of him because of tall poppy syndrome and the fact that he has not delivered in finals and is taking a huge salary relative to his performance.

Some general AFL fans are thinking he is taking the piss by playing on and doesn’t deserve the final year and dollars.

Does not justify the booing, but gives a possible non-racist explanation.
Long shot...not sure Pies fans think that deeply.

Next match I watch, I'll get back to you....but it at least sounds like the endevour was there on the weekend. I was at the Geelong game and neither their performance or endevour were of AFL standard.
