I am stunned by the amount of injuries we have suffered. To that person that placed a curse on the team, we are sorry please forgive us. A shocking 2nd quarter but they at least fought it out to the end.

We had an extraordinarily good run with injuries last year. Life has a way of balancing out.
I'm disappointed to lose to a team that I don't particularly rate (though you couldn't really fault them after qr time yesterday), but the effort for the most part was still there. The defenders fought like blazes but they were just undermanned. Same with the midfield once Mills was gone. Less forgiving of the forward line which still had some potency even after McDonald's departure but even there maybe I'm being harsh.
Loved all of Erol, Chad and Jimmy R's games in particular. We get some manpower back and we'll rebound - might be a bit ugly until then. Watched a bit of the ressies, the short term answer doesn't lay there I'm afraid.Comment

Will Hayward: 8 disposals for the match. Unless he’s also playing sore, that’s a pretty disappointing outing by a now experienced member of the squad.

So re Bud.
I’ve been happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. It was fair enough that he signed on. He did kick 50 goals last year. Yes, May got him in the final but he wouldn’t be the first May has done that too. As for the GF, he was hardly alone.
I also thought a) at the ground, his movement looked good against the Gold Coast in round 1 and would get better with more training under his belt and b) he’s often taking the best key defender, which has been a huge bonus for Logan.
But, his movement yesterday was poor. He’s either gone backwards quickly or is playing heavily injured. I suspect the latter more so, but it’s probably a combo of both.
So the issue for me from here is how we prioritise team development. The first tall forward picked when fit has to be Logan, and I’m sure it already is. I saw some weird comments on the list management thread questioning whether he’s going to make it. He’s a third year, just turned 21yo key forward on track for a 40 goal season. He’s a total beauty.
It then, when fit, has to be Amartey. He’s showing plenty, and needs continuity. I hope his body holds up, as he’s very dynamic and can play the second ruck role. Though I wonder if for the sake of preserving him and getting a strong run of games into him after the bye, we solely play him as a key forward this year.
Any role Bud plays after that needs to be a combination of availability, his own injuries, who plays third tall/second ruck. I do reject the idea he’s a selfish player, however. Everything I hear from people at the club is the total opposite and they rave about the role he played in the hub during COVID, when he was out for the year but stayed to rewire his body and mentor the young guys. So I don’t think it’s about salving his ego. In fact, I suspect Bud has tried to play through injuries in recent weeks to help given how far down on soldiers we are.
As long as he and Horse are having regular conversations about what’s going on, and they are both mature enough to, then I’m sure it’ll be managed properly.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

From an outsider's point of view it looks like Lockett02 v.2Comment

Coaches votes.
10 Sean Darcy (FRE)
5 Lachie Schultz (FRE)
5 Luke Jackson (FRE)
5 Errol Gulden (SYD)
5 Caleb Serong (FRE)
Odd distribution.
Hard to argue with Darcy being BOG. Errol perhaps a little unlucky for the second week in a row.Comment
-
Two of those 5 vote blokes must have got a 4-1 split. Surely Errol was better than a one in either coach's eyes. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I don’t see how either coach could think Serong was second best on ground so I suspect he’s a 3/2 split.
The other splits are anyone’s guess.Comment

Mathematically, it’s gone 5-5, 4-1, 1-4, 3-2, 2-3. My instinct tells me Schultz got four from his own coach, as coaches love those sorts of games, and Horse has rewarded Gulden for being one of the few constants for us. Darcy was a clear BOG. He absolutely destroyed us. if he was playing weekly in Melbourne he’d be easily regarded as the best tap ruckman in the comp. Gawn is better as an overall player and elite in the ruck himself, but Darcy’s tap work is sublime.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

I found this loss to be the most disappointing of the recent losses. Maybe because it was the fourth in a row, but I think also because it's starting to show on the faces of the team. There was a period of the game when many of them looked resigned to it and checked out somewhat. I think the SCG crowd are starting to feel it too. Numbers down a little, less noise, paying less attention.
Positives: I love watching Gulden, he seems to be everywhere, covers a huge amount of ground. Good to see Hickey back, Parker ever-reliable and the first game where I thought Francis played a role, in defence. McDonald was looking very good before he went off. And you know, I didn't mind getting a look at Freo, we don't see them often over here and they have some talent.
So many injuries now, and it's obvious a few are playing hobbled. It's not going to be our year, but keep looking for those positives I guess!Comment
