Talented players make a coach look good. That said, Hardwick turned his career around and showed a bit, but I never considered him to be great and he was quick to complain when he didn’t win.
You can understand Clarko wanting a break with all the @@@t hanging around him for so long, but why would a coach quit at this time of the year? The team is clearly in transition and you would think he would wait until close to year’s end. Letting the team and club down, I think.Comment

Since we don’t know what else is going on in anyone’s life, that’s a tough judgment call. Life goes on, and impacts in a myriad of ways, as much we’d like to consider people solely from the limited perspective of footy fans.Talented players make a coach look good. It’s a very difficult job, with great responsibility and very stressful- also 24/7 for 9 months of the year. Of course unexpected issues can arise anytime to prompt a coach to quit after only 10 rounds. In this case, I haven’t heard any compelling reason from Hardwick to do so. He doesn’t have to disclose anything as bottom line it’s not our business. Wish him all the best and hope the Tigers remain mid table whoever takes over!????Comment

I dont think Hardwick is really regarded as one of the great coaches. His pre-2017 record was ordinary, and his post-2021 record is ordinary. You could say his success was due to two factors. A great list (+ poaching Gold Coast), and great assistants (Craig McRae*, Justin Leppitch, Adam Kingsley, Andrew McQualter).
The question is, could he replicate success elsewhere where he is unlikely to be able to get such a good list of players and support staff, or have the cash of a big club at his disposal ?
Even though his AFL record is not dissimilar to the great Leigh matthews (multiple premierships as player and as coach), he just dont seem to be anywhere near the same calibre.
If I were Gold Coast, I'd be sticking with Stewie Dew.
If I were Port, I'd be sticking with Kenny Hinkley.Comment
