And what has happened to the rule when a player takes a mark and an opponent comes in and grabs his jumper. It used to be 50 metres for deliberately holding up the game. What about the play on call AFTER Higgins tackled our player from less than a metre away when our player hadn't played on. Higgins was clearly in the 5 metre zone. Our player hardly moved, Higgins goes for him then the umpire calls play on. It is 50 metres every other day. 4 umpires means more inconsistency in interpretation. And in the 70's there was only one umpire.

Want to know the real reasons we struggled tonight? It’s easy: Callum Mills, Luke Parker, Peter Ladhams, Logan McDonald, Tom McCartin, Paddy McCartin, Sam Reid. These players would all be in the side tonight if not injured and make any talk about Wicks, Clarke etc totally moot. Add in Rampe and Amarty who only played because of necessity plus Matt Roberts who was part of our midfield early on and it’s patently obvious why the team is struggling. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

For me a bit of Lachie Neale about him in year2 in the way he moves and shapes his exits
Didn’t look over awed in such a trench fighting game and the style of game probably suited his attributes"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I recently watched a few Grand Finals from the 70s and it is tragic to see what has happened to the game and its adjudication. Rarely did a player get tackled to the ground
because a free would quickly be paid to the tackler if the ball carrier was caught with the ball. There was no extra merit in taking a man to ground. None of this 360 degree stuff . Scragging was not tolerated at all, any sign of an arm around a player was holding the man.The game moved fast and there were not many injuries caused by tackles as there are now ( of course there was the off ball thuggery and shirt fronts but they are 2 things that I don't mind being gone).
Its a completely different game now, and not a better one.

It’s been obvious since the start of the season that the correct way to deal with tackling and heads hitting the ground is to get rid of prior opportunity, prioritise illegal disposal and pay holding the ball if it isn’t released as soon as two hands are on the player.ie return to 70s and early 80s footy.alternatively if you don’t want to do that blow the whistle immediately for a ball up.
There is a direct pathway from a player being allowed to wrestle to free their arms to dispose to players needing to forcefully put the ball carrier to ground to create a stoppage.
If the afl didn’t have such an anti stoppage culture going back to the swans of 2005 and simply blew the whistle to ball it up you’d have many many fewer tackles where arms are pinned going to groundComment

Saints will play a well executed style of football under Lyon. But it is still turgid, defensive driven tripe for mine. They would have been belted by any half decent team tonight - we were just even worse.
They may be hard to break down, but they won't win anything playing the way they do as they won't kick a big enough score to win against good teams. It is a simpleton take - but they really only won the arm wrestle tonight because they kicked straighter in front of goal. And that is against what is a swans team hobbled by injury, and frankly playing very poor footy to boot.
A bit of credit for the success is due and we deserve a lot of criticism for the absence of same this season. Apart from maybe Parker and gulden I’d struggle to think of a swans player who has either improved or consistently played to their abilityComment

Not a single male obstetrician has actually given birth and yet many of them are pretty good at what they do. You don’t have to have played the game to understand it.

They’ve had almost all of their forwards unavailable until now and they sit what 8 and 4? It reminds me a bit of Andrew Demetrius saying Paul Roos won’t win anything playing that way.

Campbell maybe improving, I don’t think he’s near his level and he’s been inconsistent. Florent had a cracking first half last night but as with his season he’s inconsistent and I really like him but he can be good or he can be anonymous and his kicking can be diabolical. So maybe that’s his level...Comment
