I had a lovely night (after the footy). Rode my bike to Circular Quay to watch and record Vivid.
Grabbed onion rings and chips from Hungry Jacks (I never go there) , while I waited at the Ferry Wharf , I ramped up MISS YOU (The Stones) on my high end portable Bose Speaker and a slightly inebriated old rocker in a funny hat and thongs started dancing and imitating Mick Jagger to a T, he was v good, other disappointed Swans fans started dancing,
On the ferry home we assembled at the back, and went through:
    JUMPN JACK FLASH
    START ME UP
    GIMME SHELTER
    GET OFF MY CLOUD
    PAINT IT BLACK
    and the AC/DC
ITS A LONG WAY TO THE TOP…

Between stops the ferry crew joined in.
As I rode up the hill home, I played a tribute song :
    NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS
and they cheered me on from their cars and the bus.
and we forgot about the footy for awhile .

Completely agree with this comment. There is a thing called match fitness, and this was clearly evident with Rampe and Armartey, and to a certain extent with Hicky.
When you look at the midfield without Parker and Mills there is very little experience there to guide the younger players. The same applies to the backline with the both McCartins, and the forwards without Reid, and to a lesser extent Logan McDonald who was developing nicely prior to his injury.
The ruck is also missing the grunt of Ladhams, and it is becoming increasingly evident Hicky no longer has the endurance to play out a full game

Re the 50s, I think the one against Sheldrick was pretty clear cut.

It's the Errol one I have a beef with, because of the way it was officiated. The Saints player takes the mark and yes, Errol is 1-2m forward of the spot. But, Nichols yells 'stand', then immediately says 'Errol - the mark's back here'. Two totally inconsistent directions. Errol probably takes half a second to go which one is it, starts to move back, but before he gets anywhere, Nichols goes bang on the 50.

I get the case for pinging players trying it on in an attempt to hold up the kicker, but that's not what happened here.

We have fell foul of a gypsy curse this year.

Not sure how many of our 'name' players on the field have the fitness to be on the field.

Bloods spirit is often in most abundance when least evident.

Blakey in a moonboot in the ressies game. Probably out for a few weeks then?

I think both the Higgins play on one where he encroached and the push on Hickey after he marked (in the period between their two 50s) were clear cut too…

What makes you say the sheldrick one was clear cut though? Had he been told to clear the area? That was near me at the ground and he just seemed to be moving to man the mark.

By the logic of that one I thought Papley gave away 50 in the 4th when moving toward a mark when he was nowhere near the contest.

I’m more confused after Parker’s suspension around the rules in general. Are players not allowed to move to man a mark? It seemed to be pretty immediate to me.

Frustrating game on the whole. First quarter was a calamity of errors from both sides. I don’t recall a quarter with more basic mistakes even given the conditions.

We played so much better than the saints in the 2nd and 3rd and probably should have been out of sight for the fourth. 2.5 in the 3rd was the killer - Wicks was the worst of them, he even had Armatey free in the goal square.

Blakey going down definitely hurt our structure.

Umpiring was pretty poor both ways all night. The touch on Clarke for his free i50 could have been to do embroidery on his jumper. Wasn’t there at all.

But put Parker in the team and Blakey doesn’t go down and we come away with the win I think. Went home feeling pretty aggrieved about the two 50 penalties but also glad they weren’t the final margin.

Sheldrick ran in from the side thereby cutting off the option for the St K player to swing out and play on. Clear breach of one of the reasons for introduction of stand rule. So 50 metre penalty was unfortunately correct.

Another Swans player should have run from the front to stand the mark. It’s disappointing that we haven’t got this right by now - the stand rule has been in place long enough.

Dreadful game, but really impressed with how Sheldrick played. Only 57% time on ground, but really made us look much more effective around clearances. Given the year is probably a write-off, i'd like to see him stay in the team, it can only help his development.

Re the Gulden free kick, can someone explain where the mark is?

From memory the Saints player took to the air behind the 50 and was thereabouts when he grabbed the ball in the air. He came to ground/rest 1-2 of meters outside the 50 and had to take a few more steps to stop his momentum.

Gulden literally met him just before where he landed.

I don’t know when the mark was paid and where it counts. Is it whilst the player was still in the air just at the 50 meter line even if the whistle is not blown until he lands 1-2 meters outside the 50?

Even still, the umpire needs to give time for the player to move to the right spot in a situation like that, especially when he had called Stand after Gulden had planted his feet.

I'm definitely not happy with where the team is at but I don't think it's all Horse's fault....and I don't pretend to be an expert on coaching either.

So I just watched the vision of that for the first time and the St Kilda player is still on the mark when Sheldrick gets there. He hasn’t made any attempt to move the ball on.

I think there’s an argument to say that Sheldrick was outside and ran into the protected area - he was maybe 6-7 m rather than 5m from the mark when it was awarded - he didn’t change direction he just moved to the mark. Is it the case that he could have moved to the mark if he was less than 5m from the mark when awarded?

For the first time I’ve actually looked at the rules and that part isn’t clear. Listening to the audio the ump had no communication for him to clear out aside, he just said “50 meters”

While the 50 may be technically there, is that really what we want the game to become? Im sure no one would be calling for the head of the ump if it wasn’t paid a 50.

No bearing on the play whatsoever but a key moment in the game. Add that to the inconsistency of its application and it’s the sort of thing that drives fans away from a game.

Chris Scott also has the Geelong advantage of a seemingly endless salary cap.
They lost the 2021 prelim by 83 pts.....that's not a GF but it's a big final and pretty recent......so yes.

I thought Gulden stood on the exact spot the Saints player completed the mark. Poor decision and Nicholls is normally ok I reckon.

These players would all be in the side tonight if not injured and make any talk about Wicks, Clarke etc totally moot. Add in Rampe and Amarty who only played because of necessity plus Matt Roberts who was part of our midfield early on and it’s patently obvious why the team is struggling.
