There was one session when Chad ran amok, and another where Papley and Heeney looked a million dollars, but none who seemed to maintain consistent levels across all the sessions I saw (which, admittedly, was a smallish sample).

The one exception was Gulden. Everything he did in every session I saw had purpose. If he made a mistake, he cursed himself under his breath but was then back up to get to the next contest to rectify it. Every disposal he made count. Every tackle was carefully executed. So I'm not surprised he has been our most consistent and most improved player this season (even allowing for the fact his improvement has come off what was already quite a high level).
Your first paragraph shows the importance of training as what the boys do at training is often translated into their match day form. What were our coaches reactions at the time Liz?

Regarding Errol: his game against the Fairypups was unbelievable- he seemed to be everywhere, throwing himself into the play, winning the ball and using it well. He lifted the team and showed what needs to be done to his teammates. Captain material for sure!

Well, no. While most concussions involve a whack to the head, they can occur without a head knock, because it's largely the whiplash that shears the axons. So, if there's sufficient force to generate whiplash, like an unexpected bump from behind or falling to the ground without hitting the head, then
        concussions are possible.

It's not really a big secret, but a good vignette on what separates a successful season from an ordinary one.

Does Hayward have a strategy to win back the affection of Horse? Is he willing to work as hard as Errol?

I doubt Wil has to win back JL.He is in the leadership team, and if you haven't noticed he is usually first when someone kicks a goal to rush in and ruffle their feathers and pat them on the Lemonade. He does it brilliantly.

He also won a big time contested possession on the wing and fed off to Heeney who set up the match winning goal from Papley.

Liz - thanks for the extensive replies. Very much appreciated.

The interesting observation about his ability to continue to step up each time to a new level throughout his junior rise was also evident in that first game of 2021 when he made his debut. He regularly makes the game look easy. And it’s that insight that his instincts for the game would work so well when surrounded by the elite demands and pressure of AFL that probably so appealed to our recruiters.

As for your query re how high we would have matched a bid on him, not sure. I do know the club didn’t expect a bid to come inside the top 15, based on their intel and a view among some clubs that his size might preclude him being viewed as a regular and dominant centre square player - which is probably somewhat valid. What I do know is they couldn’t believe their luck he fell to 32.

As for your observations on his training habits, Horse has regularly praised him for this, and when Blakey was interviewed post match on Thursday, he positively raved about Errol and described him as arguably the best trainer at the club. To have the application to match an elite footy IQ shows he’s a rare breed.

                Thanks again.

I see him as a future coach as well.
