Round 23 Crows v Swans

The umps were mostly consistent in the first half when we were well on top and generally first to the ball. This changed as the game wore on and the crowd’s influence started to get into their heads. Most of the borderline decisions went the Crows way and I’m sure this could have had a psychological, domino like effect on our boys. However, we did run out of puff- no doubt about it. I think they kicked 3 goals in the first 5 minutes of the final quarter and we stopped to a walk. Shoring up the defence is understandable to a degree as it’s instinctive. The problem is that it leaves the forward line depleted so when and if we get the ball out of defence, it comes straight back thus putting more pressure on our backs- eventually it must result in goals. Maybe in the last few minutes, when we used to swing Sammy down back- but I wouldn’t have moved Mills off the rat.
Re: Stephens- he did a few good things but overall average at best. So I wouldn’t care if he chooses to leave, irrespective that he was an early pick. Every club makes mistakes with draft picks- it’s the nature of the beast. What is amazing is that often late, late picks turn out to be champions!
We only want players who want to be here- hello rat!????Comment

And, now, of course Dill McLachlan has weighed in saying it was a mistake at a moment of great consequence.
Huh. And 10 other decisions in a close game that had a material effect on the result? Nothing. A bit like he said nothing even after the AFL rang us to apologise for umpiring in the 2016 GF.
I’m not expecting much more from Dillon, but Gil is easily the worst, most miserable sporting administrator I’ve ever seen.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Can’t agree that we didn’t deserve to win. Obviously that last call helped, but we were fantastic earlier. I loved it (but the final quarter was torture).
Don’t forget that the crows also benefited from some very dodgy calls that helped them get back into the game. It can’t just come down to a bad decision in the last minute. In short, suck on it, Crows.Comment

And you make a good point, i'm-uninformed. If Adelaide had got up to win, would there have been a furore about the free kick against Gulden in the third quarter that gifted the Crows a goal?
Many incorrect decisions affect the result of the game.Comment

Well, won't we be popular if we make the finals! This, and our victory over North, are going to be mentioned non-stop over the next few weeks! Neither controversial finish is our fault, of course, but that won't matter to the haters!

I actually think McLachlan's comments are reasonable: AFL 2023: Gillon McLachlan press conference, Ben Keays goal, behind, review, reaction, video.
Edit to fix dodgy spelling.

Every time we looked like going forward we get a free against. First half 2016 all over again. I wonder if the umpires got thx call at 3/4 time?

Goal ump was confident in his decision, Field Umps have no reason to question it.
He should only have reviewed if he was unsure, he seemed very sure.
Its an outlier as they will all normally review everything but in the position he was in, when they do review them all the commentators are happy to say you couldnt have been in a better position he should have made a call
Also dont agree with Sydney rushed to play on,as though we tried to get rid of any chance for review. The ump was quick to call and we were quick to act.

Also play to the whistle, first thing they teach you at Auskick after kickingComment

The vibe I get from Healy is that he is clearly fond of us but sometimes slants his comments so as not to be seen to be "commentating favourites". I find his commentary nowadays to be dull, lack insight, and full of errors. He used to be much better.
Dermott, on the other hand, loathes us. He tries to hide it by his persistent use of the faux-fond, patronising "Swannies" and by telling us every time he commentates our games that Hayden and Ollie are lovely lads, but as soon as anything controversial arises from our matches, he lays the boots in. Years back, when Hannebery collected Hurley in the head as he turned his body to try and pick up a bobbling ball, he was calling for Hanners to be outed for weeks, claiming the brave thing for Hanners to have done was to go head first into the contest with Hurley. He'd be loving this latest controversy as a chance to stick the boots in again.
I suspect it has roots in his embarrassing season with us, was given a boost when we stole the 2012 premiership from Hawthorn, and went up another notch when we wrenched Buddy away from them. The short, peripheral stint he had several years ago with the Giants probably sprinkled a little more seasoning on top.Comment
