Though it is easy to dislike Eddie [since (despite awful on-field results) he has helped the Magpies to record membership, television ratings and website hits], this list of alternative Channel Seven commentators makes me appreciate Eddie as a commentator! I'm jealous that the Wobbles have a president who has such a high media profile that he abuses so freely to promote his club. If only his passion was for the Swans!

7 and 10 are only bidding for the Free to Air rights (which is the major component, 5 games a week)

Foxtel can now bid against um, Optus lol for the pay tv rights. (Tough bidding process that one I imagine lol).

I don't Unerstand why people are happy about 7 wanting AFL rights back, the coverage they provided was abismal. The only decent commentator was Dennis Commeti(now at Nine) and we only ever saw the Swans when they played away (not everyone can afford to go to every home game)on either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon , and certainly never at night!

You only have to look what they did with Rugby rights recently to see how they view sports. They would have to provide some pretty solid guarentees about coverage of AFL in Sydney and Brisbane before the AFL will give them the rights.

I would be upset to see Fox Footy disappear from our screens. It is one of the better channels on Foxtel and they do manage to show games uniterupted of ads and banners that cover crucial moments of the game.

I expect if this new consortium goes ahead, Ten will probably keep Saturdays as they are now - meaning Swans stay in prime time - but Seven will take over 9's coverage of Friday nights and Sundays. Expect a return to 2pm starts on Sundays if this happens as no RL match on 7
Fridays would probably be still on delay in Sydney but maybe a little earlier than 9 showed them - at least if 7 had Friday nights the AFL could schedule the Swans or Lions on the occasional Friday night game knowing that it could be shown in prime time. They wouldn't make a habit of it though - would probably get slaughtered by Friday night NRL in the ratings

While it could happen, chances are Ch 7 will keep the 1pm timeslot so they can show another Sunday game at 4pm either live (7pm News) or as the 2 hour highlights package as Ch 9 do now so they can have the 6pm News.

Fox footy will remain. 9 have to decide on AFL BEFORE they get to bid for the NRL rights, so it will be very interesting.

Remember most people at 7 are ex-9 people who were the ones that made 9 "The One".

Prime time (esp Fri nights) will be specified in the next contract, een if that means the price drops. The AFL has already said this publicly. The AFL has also had meetings with the NFL regarding a 3 or 4 way TV split (ABC/CBS/Fox/ESPN or 7/9/10/FoxFooty).

The next contract will be VEEEEERY interesting.

What they might do (according to a TV industry friend I was speaking to today) is have the Swans for Sydney audiences at 2pm (Pay TV rest of the country) - which would allow them to show the Swans until 5, and a high rating lead in tv show to the Sydney Channel 7 news from 5 to 6, but in the AFL states do the standard 1pm live and 4pm delayed matches.

This was total speculation, but certainly a possibility.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Super 12 coverage they used to hold, but decided not to take up again this season.

If so, you've completely missed the point on this.

Channel 7 were being completely screwed by Fox on Super 12 Coverage. They were unable to show any matches live or even on an hour or two delay. Highlights packages were not rating whatsoever and the whole Super 12 package was costing 7 a bomb, for which they were getting absolutely no return.

I don't blame them for dumping the minimal coverage they had.

Even by Eddie's (low) standards I cannot belive the crap he was spouting (as read in the paper).

Channel 9 are such great friends of football! Channel 7 are just the bad guys.

No they are both public companies out to make a buck and screw everyone else!

Isn't it strange, you know how Collingwood keep the game alive? Well the rights only got $1 million in late eighties, well whoopy doo Eddie, do you recall there were no Adelaide teams, West Coast were just starting out, (was Brissy there just too?) Sydney experiment was down the toilet....how come a strong Victorian comp wasn't of more value?

Surely Essendon and Hawthorn dominating and the wonderful bloody 'pies at the bottom were worth more than a million?

Why didn't Ch 9 pick it up for 1.1 million?

Because it wasn't worth a cracker without a strong national comp you bog Irish idiot!

And incidentally how has he got the cheek to spout Broady' epithets sitting there with his Toorak manicured eyebrows?

I wouldn't guarantee Friday night NSW and QLD will happen PH. Don't forget the $$$ factor. The AFL won't give the rights to 7/10 at a huge subsidy just for Fri. night coverage. 7/10 have still got to come up with the right amount of caaassshhh. That said given the AFL's recent statements on a second Sydney team it's hard to see this happening.

I do wonder though if 7/10 were to win it at a lower cost whether this might be the impetus for the AFL to cut the Dogs and the Kangaroos loose of their funding to save the AFL the lost rights $$$. That's the other part of the equation.
