"Twelve inside-50?s, coming back from the knee reco that was a terrific effort."

"He really added another dimension to the side, just that extra tall, he got on the ball a couple of times, his height, his agility, it was really good to see."

"He looked confident and is only going to get better. He has a really important role for us."

Some draft thoughts

I think the Swans have done well in this draft and most importantly that they have shown to be a club with a good soul.

Saddo and Powell were not in the scene so why jerk them around like other clubs did with their disgruntled players?

Our policy in recent times has to been to swap our picks for already made players. It was a short term policy which in the end (or very end) brought us a flag.

What does the club do next? Say lets start from the beginning and get some new cornerstones for a new era? That would require getting rid of players we already have and need. Catch-22 I guess.

So the club has followed an 'if it not broke dont fix it motto' and kept the list largely intact.

We are in a no-lose situation in the draft. If we draft junk then we can say 'what did you expect with those picks' and if we pick up a couple of smokies than fantastic.

I think for the most part the clubs drafting policy has been great especially drafting old Swans such as Monty and Kirk.

Im not exactly sure of their status but if the likes of Schmidt, Wiloughby. Malceski and the like come through then we will be in even better shape.

Only us, Port, Brisbane and St Kilda have made the final four two of the last three years.

This club has consistently made the finals for the last 10 years and can't see that changing.

Same for other clubs though. Each recruits in their own way and not only us but few have won the flag (in the last say 10 years - modern day footy).

What I see is that a trick does not normally work twice. Tricks got work out over the times. This means we need to be more progressive in our strategy in order to get the next one.

Saddo and Powell asked to be traded because the club had already jerked them around. The club was happy to see them go because they did not rate them as players. There is no 'soul' about it. I do not imagine that either Powell or Saddo are particularly thrilled with the Sydney Swans at the moment. All they have done is resigned after having been given the sack anyway - Powell may even be wondering if he ever got employed in the first place.

I cannot criticise the Swans for doing the right thing by the players, even if we could have got a better deal. It all helps engender a good feeling around the Club.

0.3+0.3+0.3=0.9 which is still less than Hall at 0.99.

Your probability maths is a bit suspect there - though the conclusion is not far from that which the correct maths would yield.

A draft pick has similarities to an option. The value of an option is dependent on time to maturity and underlying volatility (except upside down in this case - a draft pick loses value with increased volatility whereas an option gains value with increased volatility).

It's also worth noting that although the Swans knew they were getting a solid player when they traded for Hall - and a KPP at that - no-one in their right mind would have imagined that he would become the player he has today. Had St Kilda known what they were trading back when Hall was a 24yo, he would have commanded a couple of top 5 picks at least. So in hindsight we got an absolute bargain, though the trade was very reasonable at the time, based on available info then.

Alot of the analysis of the draft and in particular the trading of Saddington & Powell has been a little too simplistic. We simply cannot look at what we received for the two (fourth Round picks) and what we gave for Richards & Chambers (first Round & Second Round) in isolation. If we took this view then these trades seem a little skewed and we seem a little hard done by.

However we should also look at the overall effect of the four players on the teams Salary Cap. I am sure that Saddington & Powell combined would have been on more than Richards & Chambers. Simply Saddington was costing too much for the value or upside he offered to the team. We have effectively swapped him and a lower salary for Richards.

It's not simply just the trade numbers but also whether a persons value to a team is worthwhile as opposed to his salary. It is obvious that our Salary Cap has more pressure with "Premiership players" O'Keefe and Davis re-signing. YES we did the right thing by Saddington but I am sure the club was not niave in also looking after itself against a player that was possibly on around $250,000 - $300,000 per annum.
