Let's give it to Adam Goodes. Surely he's been around long enough and proved himself? Oh wait - he believes in the footy gods and Nick Davis so probably wouldn't give up #37 as it would displease them!
Actually 8 would suit Monty - he's as big an actress as Cressa was for a free kick!
To those that say Kels was handed the number 14 jumper as some sort of recognition of his potential to be captain, the great PK tells it differently.
He says that when it came time for him to get a lower number, his favourite number was 7. At the time it belonged to Dennis Carroll, no way was Dennis going to give it up. Two times 7 = 14. Is that available. Yes said the property steward, and so it became that Paul Kelly wore the 14 guernsey. Absolutely nothing to do with it being Skilton's guernsey.
I believe its time to bring the jumper back. Give it to a Malceski or someone like that, maybe even a Dempster (or I tend to think Sean has chosen 26 as his number cause his old man wore 13. He's twice the footballer his dad ever was), just don't burden them with the expectation of wearing the number of a former great, cause thats what you do if you leave numbers in retirement for to long.
Oh and please lets not do the Richmond thing and give the captain the number 14 guernsey. We have had plenty of good captains who have worn numbers other than 14. Barry Round (25) Rick Quade (16) Peter Bedford and Stewie Maxfield (11) and of course Dennis Carrol (7). Would not perpetuating the captain as the wearer of 14 in some way devalue these players contribution to the club as captains. Are we not saying in some way that between Skilton and Kelly, there has not been a captain worthy of the 14 guernsey. I'm sure I could mount any sort of arguement to demonstrate that Bedford was a better player and captain than Kelly. Therefore why not the number 11 be the captains number. It has been used by 2 very good captains in the past.
In summary, bring back 14 and give it to Malceski.
PS Wasn't Browning captain for a short period of time?. If so thats 3 captains who wore number 11.

Who is this "Ben Mathews" you speak of. In my circle of friends the guy who wears #4 is named "Little Tone".
That must be his name because I never hear "Ben Mathews" mentioned in the commentary. Come to think of it that could be explained due to #4 not doing much useful on the field recently.
Good post Doc. Didn't know that about Kels 14. Multiples of seven seems to have some significance for us, as evidenced by 21 in the GF. Perhaps we should be thinking about who should get 28?
Yeah time to see 14 running around again for us. Monty could have it if he wanted it, but Mal's a good pick it he doesn't.
To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!
Or we could start a 'like-for-like' tradition and give it to Monty: nuggety, burrowing, in-and-under type with dubious disposal by foot (OK, not Skilts). 11 would need to be a raking left-footer (Maxy and Mark "It's a LOOOOOONG kick" Browning (hello Mr. Malceski!), 27 would need to be a tap ruckman with a jaw like a billboard, 18 would need to be chronically hamstrung, 23 need to be a balding utility who dates soap stars, a small who can play tall and is a rotten set shot for goal, 25 needs to be a defender going grey prematurely, 22 the next swingman who should be played in a KPP role although doesn't have the body for it...
