Didn't the swans apply for 6 Melbourne games??
I don't know why the Swans are blamed...the AFL only approve rosters based on financial advantage. Collingwood play a lot of games in Melbourne because their fans come out in force, Hawthorn and St.Kilda have their games funded by the Tas Government, likewise with the Roos in the ACT.
I can't see what the Swans can do that would convince the AFL that it was imperative for them to guarantee a certain amount of games for Melbourne. Melbourne members or not, the Swans have survived for 20 years here because of the plain and simple fact that they are in Sydney. I really don't think the AFL will do anything for the Swans in Melbourne unless in fits in with what they deem to be the correct "grand plan".Comment

People who write off the Melbourne support are as blind as the club on this issue. Sure we are no longer "South Melbourne", but we are still very much the same club and I can't think of another team in this league that is so willing to piss off a quarter of its membership base.
I very much doubt membership would completely be wiped out down here in Melbourne because of the loyality factor, but the numbers will keep on dropping if our treatment keeps going the way it is. The problem I have with this issue is a double edged sword.
1) They keep making statements of how important the Melbourne supporter base is, yet they never seem to back it up. We only get 2 aftermatch functions a year, our club run office is only opened 3 times a week and I'm still to get a copy of our club magazine. To hear Paul Roos state that the club is trying to get more games down here would be hearting, but for the fact we have been down this path before.
In 2000 at the Melbourne family day, Rodney Eade got up and told the crowd that the Swans were going to play a practice match down here the next week, yet in the next days paper we find out that the game is going to played in Sydney.
2) If we are in so much danger financally, how come the club isn't actively trying to improve the Melbourne membership base??? There are so many more non members down here who don't feel taking out membership is value for money, when all you really get for an extra $40 a year is a bumper sticker and a keyring.
You bring up other interstate club, but Brisbane are a good case example of how to go about treatment of members. Even with the "home" the Dees play against them in Brisbane, the Lions have a deal with the AFL to play 6 games at least each year and they also have a pre season match in Melbourne as well. So its not that hard to get us extra games in Melbourne. They also have a socal club in the same spot each year, unlike us who have had to put up with 4 different pubs in 4 different years.
Like it or not the "Melbourne" part of this club is here and its here to stay and if treated right, the club could make more money out of us, than they do now. Just because the club moved North, doesn't mean we fans in Melbourne have less right to OUR club than a part time fan from Bondi. Its a joke it has come to this because we agreed to send our club to you in return for a safe and sound future, the least we can expect is a min 6 games each season with a pre season match thrown in as wellOnce was, now elsewhereComment

I agree with all you say. I am a longstanding member and attend each Melbourne/Geelong game with a group of other Swans members. I can tell you that none of us is happy with the way things are going. The infrequency of the games makes is very difficult to schedule attendance, particularly this year. When we part at the end of a game we say see you "in 6 weeks" or just "see you". When the next game is due we have to do a ring around to see how many have remembered to keep the gameday free. It is 'easy' to get out of the habit of going to games.Originally posted by robbieando

I am on the brink of dropping my membership for the first time as are a number of my friends. A membership only allows you to go to go 5 or 6 games and you have to have those days available. The wives sometimes want us to go to weddings, birthday parties or any number of things which clash with the footy. So many of us just can't attend on the dates we play here in Melbourne. I have always regarded Swans membership as more of a charitable donation rather than a financial or other benefit to me. Despite what is said from time to time by the club I don't believe that they are sincerely trying to maximise club games in Melbourne and I think they pay scant attention to us.
If we lose one more game in Melbourne they will lose my goodwill....and my membership.
Sure I will still follow them. I'll even attend the games when I can. But I will not be a member. I don't think they really care. Just maybe, if Melbourne membership continue to drop of, the penny may drop. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Listen, I have nothing but sympathy for our Melbourne based supporters, but there isn't much the club can do about the fixture.

The home team gets to keep 100% of the gate. Therefore all money non member Swans fans in Melbourne pay for admission goes to the other club. The Swans get nothing. On the other hand all the money Melbourne Swans fans pay in Membership fees goes to the Swans. The AFL do take a certain proportion of all membership fees for equalisation etc. That is one reason I encourage all Melbourne Swans fans to take out a membership. I don't like the idea of Collingwood/Essendon etc getting money from us. I thought we need it more. I am no longer convinced of that.Originally posted by Damien

I love the fact 'our' club has a wonderful Melbourne supporter base, and has an amazing heritage and history that spans both cites, but the fact of the matter is that the Sydney Swans have survived because of where we NOW exist and have done for 20 years. South were dead or merge bait in '81 and were dead in 92 also. No matter how passionate the hardcore fans were on both occasions, the only reason the red and white still exist is because of the importance that the AFL place on Sydney as a city and brand the swans have built within it.
You would swear to god that Melbourne fans NEVER jumped off the bandwagon based on what I read here from time to time, I remember flying to games in 92,93,94 etc in Melbourne and the amount of swans supporters were very small when copmpared to throngs coming out since 1996.
The priority has to be developing tradition and passion within Sydney. If allowing the Bulldogs to play here helps with that and costs Melbourne a game, so be it.
I was born in Melbourne, and from a passionate Bloods family, I have lived in Sydney since I was 15. (Before anyone decides to jump on me regarding this argument from the tradition angle).Comment

RWO is a site that is accessible by Swans supporters of all ages and walks of life. A swear filter is in place to mask offensive words and phrases. This swear filter contains offensive words and variant spellings of offensive words to stop you from deliberately avoiding the swear filter. Do not attempt to avoid the swear filter through alternate spelling of offensive words. Do not attempt to avoid the swear filter by devising systems to fool the swear filter in its recognition of offensive words.
4) Inappropriate Language / Excessive swearing
RWO is a site that is accessible by Swans supporters of all ages and walks of life. Moderators will let some minor cases through. Anything deemed to be of poor taste or of an offensive nature may be removed at moderator discretion. Consider all members when posting; what you think is funny, not all members will feel the same way.
5) Trolling / Baiting
Deliberately posting on threads in an attempt to stir / bait other RWO users will not be tolerated.
6) Flaming / Sniping / Abuse / Insulting other members
If you have to have a go at someone personally, take it off the boards. Everyone else doesn't need to see your hissy fits. Remember, "Play the ball, not the man". This includes spouses or partners. If you don''t like a post, don't flame, snipe, abuse or insult in response - it makes the job of moderation much harder. Report the post through the forum reporting mechanism (click on the Triangle with the exclamation mark) and let the Moderator / Administrator group deal with it.
7) Legal issuesa) The Moderator / Administrator group will keep a very close eye on threads discussing rumours or anything that could be potentially libellous. Moderators and Administrators are not interested in the chance of legal action regardless of how small - if deemed that there is ANY threat to RWO potentially, we will come down hard on it.
b) Due to potential issues of copyright infringement and the potential legal implications, posting of complete articles is NOT permitted. If necessary, post a link to the article. Where appropriate, you may quote sections of the article to aid in discussion.
c) Due to potential issues of copyright infringement and potential legal implications, posting of links to "live streaming (of AFL games)" and "AFL content" sites that are not AFL endorsed is NOT permitted. Posts with such links will be removed immediately and infraction points will be issued.
d) Freedom of speech does NOT = freedom to slander
8) Racial / Sexual Discrimination / Villification
It is not acceptable for members to engage in racial and/or sexual discrimination / villification. It is not acceptable for members to use terminology in describing race or gender in a derogatory manner. Discussing and disputing the views and opinions of other posters is acceptable. Personally vilifying or abusing others for having certain characteristics, or being a member of a certain group (or because you think they're a member of a certain group), is not. This rule shall apply to any post attacking race, skin colour, ethnic background, gender and sexuality.

9) Prohibited

10) Off-topic Posts

11) Attachments
Attachments within the size limit prescribed are permitted.
