He didn't have a pre-season this year and still managed to play all 24 games. As soon as he got to the club, he was ordered to have a hernia operation. You can expect him to be on fire all year and Roos has been giving him jobs all over the ground. He kicked 32 goals for the year as well. 3rd behind Hall and Magic.

I don't think those perceptions are misguided. He has improved as the year has gone on, but he still doesn't chase enough, I can recall a few incidents on Saturday that disappointed me.

I think the leak earlier in the year that he wanted to move to Sydney was just a ploy to get more money out of Brisbane. He is after all his own manager.

Not a hope in hell ; thats for sure. Can anybody seriously see Aka
fitting in with the Roos style (ie the team is more important than the individual)

I actually think he would fit with the TEAMS syle of running play very well.

But you make very good points about his attitude fitting in.
I agree, he would most likely cause problems.
Better to steer clear I'd say

            Aker signs two-year deal
By Darren Cartwright and Gary Smart
            September 23, 2003

IT WAS a bittersweet moment for Brisbane yesterday after Jason Akermanis agreed to a new two-year deal, but classy midfielder Nigel Lappin was all but ruled out of Saturday's AFL grand final against Collingwood at the MCG.

Akermanis's re-signing ends months of speculation he would quit the Lions and join the Sydney Swans in 2004.

The 26-year-old has been in negotiation with the club for several months and originally sought a four-year deal, while the club wanted him to come to terms for three years.

Ultimately the two-year compromise is believed to please both parties.

By the end of the deal the Lions will be able to assess the midfielder's worth at the age of 28 while Akermanis would be in a position to test his value on the open market.

The new deal is believed to be worth more than $750,000 over two years which is significantly less than he could have earned at another club.

It is believed what influenced his decision was the fact there are very few clubs in the league that hold appeal for the talented speedster and he was loath to put himself on the market and end up with a bottom-placed Melbourne club.

While his outspokenness and love of media attention has been known to infuriate Leigh Matthews on occasions, the coach has apparently strongly encouraged Akermanis to remain with the club.

He will be a vital cog in the Lions' quest for a "three-peat" after Matthews basically ruled Lappin out with what many suspect is a rib injury although the master coach would not confirm or deny the problem and the club pushed the line it is a corked hip.

"He'd be unlikely today. When you have a knock kind of thing it's uncertain how long it will be before the discomfort goes away," Matthews said.

"You can take your pick (on the injury). I am actually following the Essendon school of injury disclosure - he has the flu."

Veteran Marcus Ashcroft (knee), utility Aaron Shattock (knee) and Chris Scott (groin) must prove their fitness at training tomorrow night.

Matthews said Collingwood had far more stars in its line-up than people give it credit for because it was overshadowed in the media by club president Eddie McGuire, coach Mick Malthouse and skipper Nathan Buckley.

Malthouse's every word is reported in the Melbourne press, McGuire has popstar status and Buckley is the prince of Collingwood and sought after by the media.

Matthews said defender Ben Johnson was just one Magpie who flies low under the recognition radar because of the popularity of the Magpies leaders.

"For some reason or another they have the Eddie, Mick and Bucks show and everyone else just gets pushed into the background or something." said Matthews.

"They have a lot of very good players that don't seem to have the reputations because everything seems to be centred on their big personalities.

"Ben Johnson is a good example of that and has become a really top-notch running small-medium sized defender but hasn't got the reputation in the wider football world."

Even though Collingwood beat Brisbane in a qualifying final a few weeks ago, Matthews said that worked in the Lions' favour just as it did when they met the Swans last Saturday.

Fosdike is my personal pick this year, and I know many won't agree.

Talk of Davis, Stevens, MJ, Ablett, and the like is a joke IMO.

I thought we all agreed on a youth type policy?

              Agree 100%.

Davis, Stevens, MJ and Nog are players we should keep and would be mad to trade them.

Fosdike is definately trade material and we would pick up something good for him.

Scott Stevens will be traded as well as Matthew Nicks. With Stevens leaving Port for Collingwood, that creates a spot for Nicks.

IMO it is also time to trade Doyle while we can still get something for him. Although a good player, he is far too injury prone and has not played many games because of injury. Falls into the Heath James category unfortunately.

Seymour, Bucky, Frosty, Warfe will all probably depart as well. Maybe Seymour to be given another chance.

                With Cressa that makes 7.

Port would be stupid to trade for Nicks. Not the kind of player they need.

Thank God we're not going to have the Aker Show!
