    Hall reported?

    30 May 2004 Herald Sun
    AAP

SYDNEY faces an anxious wait to see if reformed AFL firebrand Barry Hall fell off the wagon and belted Western Bulldogs captain Chris Grant behind the play at the SCG on Saturday night.

The video review should explain why Hall's opponent Grant ended up doubled-over late in the match while play continued at the other end of the ground.

Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde said after his side's 26-point loss to the Swans said that he is interested in viewing the footage.

And he won't be the only one.

If Sydney lose Hall to suspension for its showdown on Sunday with the unbeaten St Kilda it will be a crippling blow to the Swans chances, especially after losing Jason Saddington for the rest of the season to a knee injury.

But it's believed video of the incident is unavailable as the broadcast followed the ball.

That would mean the AFL could call on the players to give evidence and they are usually loathe to implicate each other.

Grant was principally responsible for one of Hall's more forgettable outings this season, restricting him to one goal before the Swans spearhead was forced to the bench under the blood rule with a few minutes remaining.

Before that a few umpiring decisions went against him, particularly when Ryan Hargrave flew high off Hall's head using his knee in a violent marking contest.

His clash with Grant was the last in series of events in the last quarter that had the accomplished boxer doing his best to harness his famous temper of old.

Sydney coach Paul Roos said he could understand Hall's predicament late in the match and admitted to sending out messages to his leading goal kicker to keep his cool.

"As a forward you can get frustrated when you are not scoring - if you are kicking 1.4 instead of 4.1," Roos said.

"At times he did get a bit frustrated.

"He's just got to keep going and normally he does.

"I think he's been terrific at it (controlling his temper), he's certainly learning how to cope with it.

"It's just something that he has to keep putting up with, I guess."

But having said that, Roos couldn't shed any light on the Hall-Grant clash.

"You are not looking behind the play when you are coaching so I honestly don't know what happened."

Don't worry, if they had footage then it would have been shown on Saturday night. And we didn't see even a down the ground shot.

Foxtel uses up to 4 camera's less than 9 and 10 per game, they have no hope picking any of this up if it is more than 50 meters off the ball.

But knowing our luck some 11 year old kid behind the goals who was trying out his new camera phone caught the whole lot in cyrstal clear clarity and has sent it via email to the AFL.

We need to keep in mind that it wasn't the coverage video that got Holland in trouble for punching Willo behind play.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

That was a channel 10 camera crew doing close up's for stock footage and a doco.

What are the chances of something like that happening again ?

I haven't heard from one person who actually saw the incident. Anyone?

Nah, keep quiet if you did because otherwise you might be subpoenaed to give evidence!

Ok, just got off the phone with a mate...

                        .... who's brother's girlfriend's brother's boyfriend -- yes this is Sydney -- siad this is what happened:

Grant was jostling Hall from the side/behind.
Hall feigned to throw his elbow back into Grant's guts.
                        Grant dived.

IF true, Barry will be fine.

                          Great Interview

Between games today there was a fantastic story done on Barry Hall, and it went to great pains to show the wonderful progress that he has made since leaving the Saints for Sydney.

He said that he was unhappy with the "Big Bad Bustling Barry" tag, and he wasn't at all like that now.

The program showed that he spends time promoting AFL to schoolchildren, he had melowed, and an anger management course had helped him.

At the conclusion of the program, the presenters were forced to acknowledge today's incident....I sincerely hope that there was nothing in it!

                          Anyway, carn the Pies.

I don't barrack for them, but they are good for my business when they are winning.

Channel 9 on the Sunday Footy Show were having a bit of fun with the incident today. They showed the game footage, with Hall and Grant standing calmly next to each other, then the bounce of the ball, and then Grant squirming around on the ground. They were also wondering what happened, but they seemed to have the attitude of "damn, I missed it" rather than "that's terrible". They must have run that ten seconds of footage at least three times. BT was particularly old school about the biffo he evidently missed.

I'm hoping there's nothing in it, of course.

I'm pretty sure AFL rules do NOT allow unofficial footage (including any recorded by the clubs) to be used at the tribunal.

I'm also certain that evidence from spectators is NOT acceptable.

....but I still wouldn't like to see any eye witness reports published here - but please tell me privately. Like everyone else I was watching the ball (not the Hall).
