I think there should be a board rule that talk of the 1998 draft is anathema.
I don't blame the recruiters - the draft WAS thin.
But to have 3 of the first 8 picks, and not hit a single champion, well... that just hurts.
It may well be remembered as the last draft in league history, in which it was possible to do that poorly with those picks

Can you imagine if instead of Fosdike, Fitzgerald and Bolton, we had have taken Hayes, Carr and Penny/Harley.

    Stop it, Stop it.
    THE PAIN.
    Ahhhhhh!

I'd take Jason Laycock in return for Jarrad McVeigh!

      I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Ahhh, but you might not be so ready to say that in 4 years time
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

McVeigh provides something we critically need, now. That is, a hard at it, skillful type who can bolster the midfield.

Saddo is not a critical inclusion to our team IMO... and a pick around #30 is like 'two in the bush'...

That is why I would trade.

...and the Nick Davis trade was quite unique as pointed out...

A season does not make a career. We should be bargain-hunting for the players who have potential but have performed poorly this year. Dont think trading for currently performing players would bolster our chance at all.

I would trade Fosdike AND Saddington for Mark McVeigh. I dont understand why some of you value Mark McVeigh so little.

I can't believe people are using the adjectives like: hard and skillfull.

I'm thinking: Bomford, Filandia, O'Connor, Blumfield, and even Heffernan, Caracella, Hardwick.

You seriously don't think McVeigh is hard and/or skillful? Entitled to your opinion of course, but I would have thought those two attributes would be generally agreed on when it came to Mark.

                        Pedant.

Bear - I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. McVeigh is a decent midfielder, but that's all he is. It's not as if he's a rare type of player. Offer them a Ben Mathews or Nic Fosdike with a mid-draft pick, and they'll call it even.

Saddington looked like a star early in his career, when he played on a wing or a half-back flank. Give him the chance to return there, and I reckon he'll be on a par with Joel Smith and Matt Lappin.

I know the Davis trade was 'unique', but not drastically so. The situation would once again be a homesick young bloke with only one club to choose from if he wants to be near mum and dad. I don't think Sheedy is the sort of coach who'd want to have a disaffected, unwilling player on the list. Simply, they'll deal at a decent price, or we say 'no thanks'.

As a midfielder I rate McVeigh above Fosdike/Mathews, but below J Bolton. He'd be about Top 50 midfielder. Not worth making a fuss about. If it's an easy deal fine, but if Essendon push walk away.

                          Beware Essendon ability inflation.

I think Mark as a player would be a good fit into the Swans. He is aggressive, loves tackling and hard-ball getting. Very good awareness and hands. Can take small forwards and has done some good shut-down work across half-back. His long, low flat passes would be ice cream for Baz, Micky & Co.

Doesn't have Nic's speed and endurance, or Saddo's height and athleticsm. But he has got some aggro and very sound disposal. And he will cost either Nic or Saddo. Given that none of these three played for us last Saturday, which one of them would have helped us the most?

He does seem to have this fantasy of playing for the Swans with Jared. That's half complete and we can use this to our advantage. But Essendon rate him highly and so they should. Although not an elite midfielder, he's easily one of their best and his departure would hurt them at this stage (another good reason to pursue him ). They could probably really use a running-man like Nic and I'd say this is our best barginning chip.

Like it or not the intention is clear this october -- recruit, recruit, recruit. We'll also be going pretty hard for that key defender and/or ruckman. That means some peoples' favourite Swans are going to play somewhere else next year.
To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!
