M McVeigh has been given an unaccountable role in the midfield over the past couple of months, simply so he gets a lot of possessions and his trade value is inflated - because Essendon know he is going home in trade week.

Who do you have in mind?

Would seem to be the wrong way round to decide what you want to "spend" and then go and find someone to buy.

Surely it should be a case of identifying who you want, establishing their possible availability and then working out the maximum you are willing to part with to obtain them - then, of course, trying to negotiate a cheaper price.

I can't think of many midfielders who'd be worth Bolton and Saddo and another "good pick" - certainly not many who would be available.

You need to look at who is under cap pressure. I'd say the following teams:

Essendon (Mecuri backloaded contract still requires some payout)
Brisbane (Time for players to cash in before too late)
Freo (always in cap trouble)
Melbourne (if the AFL make them pay 97% of cap for financial assistance).

Most likely our big trade will come from there. In a way I hope the lions dont win this year. There could be a real oversupply of money hungry quality if the dream ends.
Simon Black in Swans colours sounds good to me.

Part of the conspiracy theory (that I don't think even Sheeeeeds could control): I thought McVeigh was outstanding in the final quarter of the Geelong game; 2nd only to Hird in almost accomplishing the impossible comeback.

It would be such a nice note to go out on. I for one hope that it's his last quarter for the 'dons.

PS Isn't it horribly unfair that our game is structured in a way such that the majority of teams (this year 14 out of 16) will finish with a loss, and therefore the majority of retiring players go out on a downer? I reckon the Glen Jakovich 'mid-season retirement in a fixture we normally win' is the way to go.

But losing Bolton, Fosdike and 2 draft picks for McVeigh and a top-class midfielder would be a good overall outcome.

Who would that top-class midfielder be? Before getting hypotheorical, we should look at what is within the realm of feasibility. All talks about trading for Black and such are wishful thinking. Such trades are never going to happen.

We should be looking at what are players we could approach before deciding which players to give away.

I dont think when a club is willing to offer a top-class midfielder for trade, they would want to receive a Fosdike or a Bolton at all. Most clubs trade to address weakness. A club must have a very good midfield to let a top-class midfielder go. For instance, if we were going to trade Goodes, certainly we dont want a lesser-version of Goodes as the return.

This draft pool seems to be pretty bad. Essendon is targetting an established player instead of improving the drafting position. Same for us, Adelaide. West Coast by some reports is willing to give up their first draft pick for players too. In a good draft, this is very unlikely.

Why not be hypothetical - that's all this is anyway. Most (all?) of us don't know who is out of contract, what contracts people are on or want, etc.

From our perspective here it doesn't really matter which way we do it. I think this trade would work for the Swans if we could get a really good midfielder. Depending on who the midfielder is the deal could be adjusted slightly with more players/draft picks going either way.

Unless you were willing to take a lesser player because your stocks in that area were already strong, but what you really wanted was the draft pick.

Then the whole trading plan is possibly moot - either way it doesn't really affect our wish list here. Obviously it's a good idea to keep the trade recommendations reasonable, but how realistic and doable they are is pretty much beyond most of us to determine given available information.
