This is a good deal for Sydney.

I'm a bit concerned at some of the monetary figures being bandied about. Ottens is not worth that much money, not based on his recent performances anyway.Comment

The word is he is getting $450K which the Tigers want to cut back to $320K. So to get him we could offer $400K, as a reasonable inducement over his $320K, plus 20-25% CoL allowance, which would thus place him at $480-500K.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Would be very happy to see Ottens at the Swans.Roos obviously thinks he can get the best out of him,which is very good btw.$500,000 is paying for what he can do and not what he has done so it is a bit of a risk but I would suggest Ottens of today would have compared more favourably than Hall in his last year at St Kilda.
I still want a classy midfielder though.Comment

great deal if it happens. i think the article mentioned the potential for 500k rather than that being the starting salary. would this be based on getting a certain amount of games in the first season, i.e not too many missed with injuries, and then an option of 500 in the second year??
i do worry about players who have missed through serious injury, but i don't think there are too many big men who haven't. sounds like simmonds is a no go.....I wish my weed was EMO so it would cut itselfComment

Possibly - but perhaps Saddington, Fosdike, rd 1 and rd 2 draft picks, plus one other player would be enough.
I am quite happy for the club to use three very low draft picks to get this years quota - especially if we managed to get Bruce and Ottens through trading.Comment

I'd prefer Ottens to Simmonds.
Partly because I think Ottens could be more dangerous near goals, partly because he's a year younger, but mostly because Simmonds is a very one sided palmer of the ball in the ruck.Comment

Would love Ottens, but have concerns over his abillity to stay on the park and have question marks over his value 400,000 plus for a guy who you have to go back a atleast 3years for the last time he played a have decent game I hope he dosent turn into a white elephant.
Ps if we could get bruce as well I would sleep a little easier.Comment

I think they are similar types of player - tallish, fast, goal kicking midfielders, perdominantly "outside" players but not scared of moving through traffic. But while there's not that much to choose between them, with Melbourne we'd be negotiating for a player they'd consider to be in their top half dozen in terms of importance, with Brisbane it would be someone around 12-15th in terms of importance to them.
Brisbane would also be most interested in either draft picks or one of our younger, untested players with a bit of upside, simply because they don't have much room in their cap and Notting probably accepts he's down in the pecking order paywise.
My big fear in all of this is that we lose one of the two youngish players at the Swans who
- are now established in the team
- have lots of class;
- still a fair bit of improvement to come;
- are neither true KPP nor true midfield so, in one sense, are not core to our structure; and
- are two of the four players who I think other clubs would deem to be most marketable, partly because of the first three points above.
I'd hate to lose either of them unless it was for an abosolute top notch player -ie a Ball, Cornes, Riewoldt type, which isn't going to happen.
(I speak of Kennelly and O'Keefe BTW)Comment

Kennelly will never be traded. I doubt he would ever play for another AFL club. O'Keefe on the other hand, would be particularly enticing to Victorian clubs.Comment
