They gave in too early. The only possible explanation is that they have another trade to do and thus want to warp this up ASAP to move on. I cannot see this though unless there is a surprise trade tomorrow.

They should have hold out until the last minute on Friday if there is nothing else in mind. Why sealed the deal today given the price? Very strange indeed.

I believe we set out to rebalance the mix of our players through this trade period. So far, no progress is made on this at all. This is real disappointing.

Of course, the fat lady has not sing yet but there is not much time left either.

I'm not sure what people think we should have done.

Perhaps we could have received Jolly + 2nd/3rd rd for our 1st rd, but unless we do another trade then that extra pick may not do us heaps of good.

Also, given that Ball has at most one year left, where else and when were we going to pick up another ruckman?

Did we really think the #15 pick was going to be a star for us in the future?

Given that we gave pick 15 for Jolly, getting anything less than a top 10 pick for Doyle would be stupid. Trading Doyle now would only make sense if it involves getting Ottens to us. We will need another first round pick for that which we dont have at the moment. Getting two good picks in about 5 hours of trade which we could not do for about 4 days, is a remote chance.

Our trade offer of players is poor anyway. Not many clubs are in the dire need of getting a Fosdike, however plenty of clubs would be reaching out if we are offering one of our tough and hard working midfielders. We have quite a number of them. Cant understand why none was offered.

Swans to not trade at all tomorrow.... you heard it here first!

No interest left in the trade period - we were never gunna get a key backman and a gun midfielder - not with our draft picks anyway. And some of you people forget - the Melb media don't rate our list highly - especially compared to 'power' sides like Coll and Ess.
According to them we are lucky to finish in the top 14!

I don't think we will trade tomorrow either, which is rather depressing.

That's amusing when you consider we have O'Loughlin, Goodes, Kirk, Hall, Barry, Williams, who are All-Austrlian plus about another 4 who have made the International rules sides.

I can't remember ever seeing a better front and back half at Sydney ever.

It's in part because we do not have gun midfielders. Given media reports that pick 9 had come into the picture for Jolly, it's understandable they used pick 15.

Of the touted players Lekkas would be handy. Other than that I hope LRT, McVeigh, Shmidt and Willoughby are putting in big pre-seasons

On SEN this morning it was alluded to that another club (probably Carlton) are pissed off with Melbourne for trading Jolly.

Apparently they were after him big time and were surprised to find out a deal had been done with the Swans.

Also Jolly mentioned in his interview that he had already been up to Sydney and done a tour of facilities etc - sounds like the Swans had their eyes on him for a long time.

Maybe, just maybe, the whole "Swans after Ottens" thing was all bluff to distract attention away from Jolly!

                              You are quite correct there!!

"We started our quest for a ruckman around mid-season and Darren Jolly was one of the first names to come up in our internal discussions," Roos said.

I'm happy enough we got him. In the circumstances I dont think it matters that we perhaps over-paid for his services.

We needed a ruckman that could play next year. If we'd drafted a young ruckman with pick 15 he would not have been ready for seniors for at least 2 years. By that stage Ball would be well and truely gone, leaving us with Doyle and hoping that Erickson can continue his development.

Picking up Jolly ensures that we have a ready to go ruckman, who can also potentially provide us with 10 years service. We havent had to put in the time, money and effort developing him from a raw skinny beanpole, and we get him well before he should hit his prime.

To me it seems we got everything you want from a young draft pick without having to do the hard stuff getting them ready for senior football. And there's a lot less guess-work with a 23 yo who's played 50 games than an untried youngster who may never be good enough for seniors, regardless of where he's taken in the draft.
