Before anyone says it ( Liz! ) "Midfield Enforcer" is not a position, it is a role and it alone does not warrant selection.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

As if the club will drop our captain because of bad poor. Expect Maxfield to call it quits before the club drops him.

i'll give him 3 weeks to prove he's still got it, but todays insipid performance doesnt give me that much hope. (can't believe he dropped that mark which led to sansbury's goal)

I must sound like an old fashioned geek, but what happend to the "inspirational" captain? Is the captain of any club be allowed to reach a retirement in calm and piece, or in the middle of a "battle", etc., etc.
          Just a thought...

Not in our best 22. Neither is Tits-on-a-bull Roberts-Thompsn.

Sounds like people are starting to agree. Maxfield is finished. It was so obvious today. He needs to be big enough to step aside, sooner rather than later.

I said last year that he looked about finished, and was very surprised that he didn't retire at the end of the season. To name him captain was a bad move, because it makes any decisions at the selection table even harder. Still, if he continues to play like this, somebody is going to have to make the big call. Considering he's spoken about playing on next season, I guess it's up to the selectors.

Its quite sad that he is out of form and at the moment probably doesn't deserve to be in the top 22 with guys like Fosdike and Spriggs pushing for places. But I would be very surprised if they dropped him, simply because he is the captain. I can't imagine any side dropping their captain to the reserves, it would be a big loss of face.

He can't justify keeping Fosdike, Spriggs or even Moore out of the team.

We need to look to the future.

Maxfield wasn't Han Solo today - big changes are needed to shake the team out of its complacency.

Today Maxfield had no leg speed, kicked out appallingly, did one effective kick into the forward line that I can recall, got caught and dropped a mark when on his own which resulted in a goal. That mark situation looked almost as if he heard footsteps. Last week 8 touches, 6 clangers.

Any other player would be a candidate for the reserves next week.

In Maxfields case we have more chance of seeing flying pigs.

Right now you could not justify even suggesting he be used only of the bench as one of KB's pinch hitters.

                      Flick him.

                        Maxfield didn't stand out.

And another poor piece of play (not nice to harp of negatives but sometimes you have to) was his kick from defence just before half-time directly to a Roo that resulted in a goal (Hale's IIRC).

This is the big problem when you go for experience over top 5 B&F for your captain.
The teams who have their best player as their captain can affoard to keep them in the team when they run out of form, cos even when they are at their worst, they are still better than most of the team.
There is only one man on the Swans list like that:
                            Barry Hall.

They may have, misguidedly being rewarding loyalty and forgot about the big picture.

Did seem that we lacked a general out there after Willo got clocked.

"Doh, we missed the obvious one as captain" they will be lamenting tonight.

Im not sure you could have Barry as captain. What we seem to be lacking at the moment is direction in the midfield. We require a direct, strong running captain in the midfield - Maxfield was the man in the past, but it seems hes losing it. I dont think appointing Barry ( although he is a consistently good player) will provide the direction needed. Hes not involved enough with the midfield, its all very well to shout orders from the goal square, but we need someone in the action commanding the troops, and we know each time Barry comes to the forward 50 area we lose a target up front. It happened several times today, Barry comes up to take another meaningless Swans posession and has no realistic targets up front.
