It sucks that your team was moved from South Melbourne to Sydney and I hope any team I follow doesn't get moved. BUT COME ON, Is it a Sydney team or not? I am probably in the group that if a second team comes to Sydney (provided that it is a new team) I will think about supporting them. I am Sydney through and through and the South Melbourne links to the Swans are off-putting at best (but can be ignored). I would prefer all ties from SMFC to be severed and a real Sydney club created from the ashes (Sydney Phoenix? ). Hopefully one day...

But this is a very old topic... though I believe the SMFC links does not help the growth of the Swans in Sydney.
Like it or not given the circumstances of the Swans and the move to Sydney their will always be the link between the two clubs (and rightly so imho)
It is all hypothetical to say we would have won a premiership by now, but given the complete lack of infrastructure at a grassroots level I would find that very hard to believe

From a personal point of view I'd like Des's suggestion of 8 games at the MCG (or more!)

From a practical point of view, we really do need to get more practice at the 'G'

Ridiculous to even suggest moving Swans home games to Melbourne.

5 or 6 away games in Melbourne should be more than adequate.

Having AFL in Sydney less than once a fortnight would be a major blow to building a fan base.

I disagree with you Wil about SMFC. It is a very important part of the Sydney Swans' history and is rightfully acknowleged on the players' guernseys. Its also great for the Swans to still have so many Melbourne based supporters and great for us Sydney based supporters when we go down to Melbourne to watch a Swans game surrounded by so much red and white. I'm looking forward to that again this Saturday at Telstra Dome.

I hope you get your team matey, I really do. At the moment, my sincere thanks to all those helping the team going forward, but also remembering our rich and proud past. I, for one, am a Melbourne boy through and through but I am willing to support this great team that has been my families tradition since day one. I am not going to stop supporting this team for any reason... Oh, yeah, and until you get your team Wil, don't forget to keep your memberships up to date with the mighty Bloodstainers! Cheers mate.

Nah just give the dogs game back to Melbourne and give the swans melbourne members 6 games in Melbourne each year and all will be happy (except ignoramuses like Wil who are so Sydneycentric that they should just stick to watching League). The equation is that simple really.

I must say this raises for me the issue of the future direction of this club. Frankly our administrators don't really offer much of a public vision for the direction of the club. They may do so behind closed doors but as a ten year swans members I get no real sense of were Colless and our board want the club to go.

While I loved watching Paul Kelly, play and think it is great he is on the board, I really do question the SYDNEY Swans electing two people NOT from Sydney to the only democratic board spots. Kel should have been appointed.

Says to me the club still doesn't have real sydney roots and is instead a melbourne club palying in the sydney market.

I wish this was not the case but after ten years as a member I can't but help think it is time for some home grown leadership around our club.
I think you are wrong. I think Paul Kelly should not have got on (just my opinion looking at it from your take above). But that's who the Members voted for as with the other candidate who you deem unworthy for whatever reasons. Or were your reasons given in the above? If they were indeed your reasons.... poppycock and twaddle!

edit: oh, but I do agree with your last sentence wholeheartedly

The problem is the AFL powerbrokers are happy to keep the game in Melbourne, and with the support and crowd figures they get there, I wouldn't blame them.

That is absolute crap considering they are seriously looking at the Gold Coast market

Right - so drop the SMFC link and the Sydney Swans are now truly the most pathetic team in the competition - one of only two teams without a flag after two decades of trying...

The main reason why we should try for more Melbourne games is to play more games at the MCG. We've played only 12 games there in the past 4 seasons for a 50-50 record.

That's not a good reason to take Swans home games away from Sydney. Instead, why not negotiate to play less games at Telstra Dome and more at the MCG?
