That video that Schneiderman linked to looks pretty conclusive - everyone in the vicinity was moving as if the ball was expected. Maguire, though, was doing the right thing - watching his opponent rather than the ball - and to suggest otherwise is pushing it quite a bit too far.

3AW Sports Today just played an excerpt from the AFL instructional CD that has been mentioned earlier in this thread. It says (paraphrasing) "an incident will be considered 'in play' if it happens in the current passage of play or the next passage of play". The 3AW boys say that the CD gives an example of 'in play' as Dean Rioli hitting somone 45m from the ball.

After hearing this, I don't think the tribunal has any choice but to downgrade the charge. Barry will play!

Dont get ahead of yourself, but I agree.

Just read that "An incident will be regarded as in play if it is in proximity to the ball or the next passage of play. "

And the ball went in his direction in the next play didn't it?

If it wasn't 'in play', why was Maguire maintaining contact?

Given the AFL's pre-season DVD showing an in-play example, Hall has to be considered in play.

Also, I'm staggered that Gasper's was deemed negligent (a deliberate elbow to the face) while Hall's is the stronger charge of reckless!!

I am of the similar view. I just want the whole thing to be over so i can concentrate on the game. Hard to talk serious matchups with the cloud over hall.

But yet - I can't not read this thread - all 40 pages and I am glued...I should be hiking through Kangaroo Valley this week (rather than the last) and just come home Friday with the team selected.

It worries me that everyone is coming out confident that he will play.

                  Me = not confident...

I noticed exactly the same thing when I saw it. Every player except Maguire is getting into position, looking at the ball downfield. The tribunal would be very harsh to not downgrade based on this evidence.
Also, I think there is now a fair bit to suggest it was incidental contact - call in 100 current players as witnesses if we have to.
I am 85% sure Barry will be fine but that 15% will ensure a nervous, painful wait.

Yep, after seeing all the footage on On the Couch tonight, definitely contest the reckless and behind play charges. If Gaspar's elbow was negligent, there is NO WAY KNOWN that Barry's was more severe.

                        Also, try this.

Move to the right. Now quickly twist your upper body to the left and run that way, while trying to NOT have your right arm swing across your body. See how unnatural it feels?

What they should be arguing is that Barry went to lead to his left, intending to bump Maguire in a show of strength to put him off. Unfortunately his momentum made the arm swing around and collect Maguire in the stomach. He should have been more careful with where his arm was swinging. It wasn't as if the arm was fully extended and whirling around tornado-fashion.

Given all of that, I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect a downgrade in one or both charges - but then again, you never know with the tribunal!!!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                            My two bobs worth!

I have a theory that I don't believe has been brought up and perhaps some people may even laugh at. I can't believe I have read primarily 40 pages of this post to get to this stage, phew!!!

After seeing the replay of the "supposed punch" (remembering I was at the game and didn't see it as I was following the play) I have come to the conclusion that it could be argued that it was not infact a closed fisted punch. The reason I say this is that when Hall's arm is coming back after the "supposed punch" his HAND IS COMPLETELY OPEN and not clenched as it usually is when a person (especially one who knows how to throw a punch) punches someone. When I questioned a friend of mine who is involved in boxing he indicated that Hall more than likely jabbed maguire with his fingers or open hand or palm. I ask how quickly would someone open their hand once a punch is thrown? - NOT as quickly as Hall did in my opinion.

Being the sick Swans supporter that I am I actually rang the club to talk to someone but was quite clearly informed that the Club would not talk to anyone on the matter - I guess especially a nutter like myself.

IF Bazza goes, maybe Schauble at CHF...can we bring plugger out of retirement for one game!
It was tactical by Hall to try and loose Maguire as he knew if he could get rid of maquire it was a definate easy possession for himself. I dont think that he actually hit Maquire hard, Maquire miled the free kick.

I think Jude Bolton should be captain. Is young, hard, gives 110%, polled the best out of the swans in the Brownlow too
