      Players represented themselves with a legal advocate and support from senior members of the football club. We believe it was a fair decision.

        chatovadafloor, couldn't agree more. Now the focus is on the problem and there is a suitably qualified team working on this from a lot of angles. Some serious things being investigated!

        shorthalfhead, I believe it was a former official but not completely sure. Definitely not the board! haha

              In case there is any confusion about the Balmain forfeit that is about to happen this week against Auburn in 2nd grade, it was a board decision to forfeit, even though they had a nearly full squad. The players tried to change it but were again over ruled by the board.

              A lot of you have fair amount of knowledge on rules and by laws, can you tell me if there are any sanctions for officials for making these kinds of decisions?

              Here is the squad:

              Damian Hall, Dave Penpraze, Andrew Kyprianou, Peter Tennant, Adam Neville, Brendan Cann, Ryan Hughes, Fred McNeil, Ben Lindsay, Chris Barbera, Damien Barbera, Rick Sanders, Nathan Willoughby, Jesse Cass, Jerome Farrell, Paul Stockley, Luke Wood, Andrew Hombsch

                I would have waited personally, let Auburn forfeit first. I believe there will be a fine of around $200 ($100 going to other club) plus umpires charges. If the board made the calll knowing they didn't need to forfeit, they should be held accountable at the AGM.

                  ShorthalfHead, absolutely. The only issue is the ability for non members voting. The bpard were supposed to give a full list on Monday to the AFL, and to my knowledge have not done that, which makes me suspect there are some books on the cooker. Again!

                    Here's the appropriate section of the By-Laws FYI

The match will then be treated as a forfeit and provided a satisfactory explanation is furnished to the League, no penalty other than those specified in this by-law will be imposed.

                    5.16 Where the League is unable to advise the appointed umpires prior to them attending a forfeited match, the League will pay the umpires and the forfeiting club will be invoiced for the full amount.
                    5.17 If for any reason a team is not ready to commence play 20 minutes after the appointed commencement time for a match, the opposing club may claim the match as a forfeit.
                    5.18 All clubs must field a senior grade team in the home and away competition unless otherwise arranged with the Administration Committee. Should a club need to forfeit a match, the clubs lowest Division team is the team that is required to forfeit. Should the club play in a Lower Division fixture and subsequently forfeit a higher Division match in the same round, that club will not be awarded any match points for the higher Division fixtures and shall be liable to disqualification or such other penalty as the Administration Committee may determine.
                    5.19 A team shall forfeit a match if it is unable or fails, refuses or neglects to complete a match already commenced.
                    5.20 Where a forfeit occurs:
                    (a) The team receiving the forfeit shall;
                    (i) be attributed a ?win?.
                    (ii) have its "points for" increased by the average of the points scored by the winners of the other matches in the round.
                    (iii) have no points added to its "points against".
                    (iv) submit a team sheet for the purpose of player eligibility for finals.
                    (v) submit invoice to league for $100 compensation (not applicable if practice match played)
                    (b) The forfeiting team shall;
                    (i) be attributed a ?loss?
                    (ii) have no points added to its "points for".
                    (iii) have its "points against" increased by the average of the points scored by the winners of the other matches in the round.
                    (iv) fined $200 (not applicable if practice match played)
                    As long as the explanation the club gives the league is acceptable; the penalty is $200, a loss and a hit to their percentage.

                    The risk for the Balmain club is 5.18 for the walkout game. There's discretion for the Administration Committee, but there's the potential of the club or the Premier Division team being disqualified.

                      What about if they do have the squad, and the administration still forfeits? That is the case here.

                        They need to give an explanation to the league. If the league are satisfied, then the $200 and loss is the end of it.

                          Does the AFL have the discretion to hit the club with say a $4.4 mill fine ...?

                            Yes, but the club will be fined 10 club points if it's not received by the first of the month.
