I haven't been following the Balmain drama but I was here when Newtown folded and Easts merged. Imagine if those senior teams had survived until this day. Newtown is rebuilding and there is a lot of activity in the ES but it's not under the ES banner. IMO there is value in the "branding" of the traditional clubs and it's worth fighting for.
      give it to the game

Craigey and he's bringing down a few others.

Also saints picked up some of the Illawarra players who still want to play premier div.

Interestingly, it appears some new clubs have nominated teams. Some clubs have nominated additional teams, so some others have dropped teams. All will be revealed in a few weeks.
It must be hard to recruit a coach and key players when you won't know which division you will be playing in for a few weeks. We're all guessing and hearing (starting ???) rumours about who's going up and who's going down. But there's nothing official to go on, is there ?

We already know that Premier Division is being cut to 10 teams; with Illawarra & Balmain going down.
Nominations are in, and the league has called all clubs in for the planning meeting next week; where the teams in each division are likely to be officially announced.

There was a information meeting with the directors of Sports Club last night. I believe the receiver made a presentation and then one of the directors called a close to the meeting when people attempted to ask questions. The directors left promptly whilst the solicitor and administrator (he appointed) hung around briefly and answered a few questions. Interestingly they left together in the same vehicle. The AGM is apparently some time in January. Doesn't leave much time to get ready for a season.

Norris you must know something we don't? When was the official annoucement from the Sydney AFL that Balmain were dropping down to 1st Division? The potential new board of Balmain, met with Sydney AFL on Tuesday evening to discuss the situation and are working on an action plan to keep the club in premier division. My understanding is that there is a planning meeting next Wednesday were this will be discussed. Potentially we could see an 11 team competition next year.

Free unsolicited advice, take it or leave it - for pities sake -"potential new Board", "administrators", "solicitors" etc - abandon the current "club" as your main footy club entity, agree with the AFL that it should be de-registered then thats that - with all its governance and other issues, the comp or players don't need all the headaches and uncertainty of what seems to be now too much baggage. Start a new "club" and call yourselves Balmain Tigers and appropriate all you can from the "current club" over time as that mess sorts itself out. In the meantime rebuild from the ground up with quality people - see other posts on here about starting up in a lower division and building over time. The message that a refreshed Balmain was re-commencing in 2014 somewhere in their traditional community would be a better, more certain one to be out there.

As long as they are called Balmain, wear Yellow and Black and get Drummoyne Oval back (and the opportunists kicked out) then I don't think it really matters whether it is a "new" club in the technical sense. Of course the corporate structure and governance of that club (if it exists at all in 2014) is extremely important to ensure that this situation doesn't occur again.

I fail to see how a properly constituted membership-based club, with proper controls in place, could have got to this state. It really is deserving of an official independent inquiry, sanctioned and paid for by the AFL. Then again, it's only the SFL so who cares......

The AFL forced Uni to play at Drummoyne, you make it seem as if we want to be playing there. It is a top rate facility but we might as well be playing on the moon for all the support it gets on match day. It makes it difficult when we have up to three grounds going on any given day. Obviously none of the visitors want to play at Uni and it is goat track so there's not much that can be done about playing more games at home. Even Henson would be preferable for most as it is at least in our general area but apparently the NEAFL don't like that either.

Have to say I thought the tigers played out of birchgrove back in the day. Mind you getting old an memory is fading birchgrove is the old field with that bloody tree occupying the forward pocket they used to play at in the 90s isn't it?

Apparently AFL was played at Birchgrove from 1903 until 1926. You probably only saw the last couple of years there, Tara. Interesting that the Dockers tried to get into the ground in 2012, stating that they had 270 registered players. The council knocked it back and it remains rugby league.

The council however, gave AFL access to Glover Street, inside the grounds of Callan Park. Seems an appropriate location for what Balmain has turned into the last few years.

Hello everyone... Just to update the community on the situation at Balmain.

The AFL have decided (with no real surprise) to put Balmain in Div 1 & Div 3 in 2014. The playing group are looking forward to rebuilding the culture of the club making it a club that is about the players and supporters in an inclusive environment that embraces our juniors, and we are told on advice that the key players and coaching staff will be sticking around.

There are also a few former players who are interested in coming back to the club to assist, if the club is given back to the players that is!

The committee/board that have wreaked havoc on the state of the club in recent times are still yet to call an AGM....I think it is time for the powers to be to revoke the license and give it to the players who have already set up a professional governance structure if handed the license.
