St. George also did plan to field a second U19 team last season but the AFL knocked us back because of complaints by other clubs that believed they would have been impacted. The extra U19 team would have meant in 2 years time we had enough players to easily field another senior team. So it is not for lack of trying that we don't have any more teams.

And from our experience, you cannot expect a big percentage of 19's to filter to seniorsComment

It's interesting. Yet to see a club that can sustain two 18's/19's team. Seems to always turn out an abject failure. I believe North Shore are planning a second 19's this year and possibly Blacktown. With only 44 senior spots available each week, I'm sure that there are a few missing out every week. I would have thought that putting in a third senior team would be more beneficial that getting a second 19's team up, as most clubs would struggle to field a full side for their second 19's whilst having senior players missing out every week.

In our Prem Div Prelim final team last year we had 8 players that were still eligible for U19s, and 16 of the 22 were ex-local juniors, so we have a very good record of bringing through U19s in to senior football.
Through the Academy that we have been running the last 3 years we have had very strong numbers of ex-U17s coming to the club. For 2016 I expect it will be around 26-30 new ex-local juniors players joining the club.
If we did just what other clubs do you would probably be right but we work harder than most at developing and nurturing local juniors and we are confident it will continue to pay off for many years to come.Comment

Nothing wrong with Sutho mate - as someone who has played at both clubs the culture at Sutho is better than that at St George unless you happen to be in the click.Carn the Southern Power.....Comment

Hi Everyone - what about some real news / discussion about 2016.
My questions are
* Will UTS be the big improver - No.
* How many are Baulko and Penno losing - Stubbs off to West Adelaide
* Will UNSW be a rabble again - Yes
* Will Balmains, excellent coach appointment, transpose to a better onfield club- Will follow their development with interest
* What will Magic be like in Div 1 - surely they cant win it again - Will be competitive and go ok, mid table.
* Are Camden recruiting - Are they staying in current division? Have heard rumours of an elevation?
* Will Woolondiilly follow Gosford and like it in the lower grades but fall over as they go up - Yes.
* And what about the Penrith... so much potential, how will they go in Div 2. - Have really battled last two years. Meant to smash div 2 last year but fizzled. Only won six out of sixteen games last year after dropping from Div 1. Not sure if it's a lack of quality players, coaches or other factors ? I have a keen interest in the western suburbs clubs and I hope they have some plans in the pipeline to get back to a position of strength.
Just a few questions...... what about some updates around the traps?Comment

Actually made the finals that year, 2012. Got rolled by UTS. Thought you would remember it well, as you seem to have a photographic memory of all you "floggings" of other clubs.
Interesting though that there was no comment on the actual topic being discussed around St George.Comment

Was from SANFL actually. Won a flag with Port Adelaide. Brother was first captain of the Crows. Bloke was a lunatic, but unlike some clubs, paid him out.

We won div 2 that year so wouldn't have gotten to play against him.
Another thing on the difference between our div 2 side compared to our div 1. 2011 we lost by about 150 to Penrith out there in div 2. 2014 We won by 90 or so out there in div 1.Comment

Sydney Uni illustrate that the weight of numbers will always win through. If I was North Shore I'd be aiming for two Under Age teams and five senior teams asap. The cream will rise to the top. You only have to look at the quality of some of their juniors, Hebron, Baron-Hay, Veale and the Wright boys will all be absolute gunsComment

Anything that keeps kids in the game after Under 17s and gets them playing U19s has to be a good thing. If North Shore can get two U19 teams then provided they create a healthy enjoyable environment then why wouldn't those young men want to play senior football as well, at the level that suits them. And there's huge financial and sponsorship benefits from having clubs with 6-8 teams.

There would be each year at least 100 kids across Sydney juniors who finish U/17's and don't go on to play senior footy.
Whole host of reasons but amongst those reasons is the jump from 17's to 19's (particularly Div1) is big. So a pathway, wether it is an academy, a 2nd 19's (less serious) team or with some clubs a 19's team is crucial to keeping the young guys in the game.
Also the guys like to play with their mates (how often have you heard that) and when the guys look at playing Div 4 or 5 footy (as opposed to 19's) they cant see the mate factor.
If you can get a 19's program happening you are going to get 10+ 19-20 year olds coming into the higher grades each year, what club wouldn't want that.Comment
