GWS dont care. They are a professional sporting team and the only thing about them that relates to the west is their name which is purely from a strategic point and a marketing gimic. I dont expent them to care. What I do get upset about is when I point those charged with developing the game in the direction of a school who want to put together a TPP for their students, have third party funding (not from dep edu and state govt) it falls outside of the AFL norm. My contact has been involved with elite level sport for a number of years and still currently is. As he said when the 160 16-17yo kids he sees trial for another sport where only 25 are accepted in the sw region those kids look to other sports to further themselves. These are talented and driven kids that the AFL if they were serious about growing the game in Sydney would look to harness. Instead they ask for money to be a part of their programs whilst other sports do not. At present they are too many road blocks in the way to grow the game.

I suppose dressing them as Jaffas makes more sense than the "Manly Giants" debacle ever did, and that was/is just nonsense.

Getting rid of the Green and Gold, a clear attempt to destroy any remnants of the history of the code in the Bankstown area, will further alienate them from the true grass roots supporters ... but it will at least help identify GWS as responsible for the game' demise.

If they had been half smart, they would have kitted them out in Swans gear!

"Trying" to field an u/15's team, when you have no other age groups below them as support, is as stupid an idea as I have ever heard - why not "try" with an u/12's, or whatever is the youngest competitive age, and put a progressive plan in place?

When this u/15's team gets belted every week, and the parents get sick of travelling 3 hours for mismatched games, and then they forfeit every other week, soccer and NRL will happily re-sign them the next year ... just proves once again that AFL in Sydney, and particularly in the west, have NFI about what they are doing

... sadly, 30 years may be optimistic tara.

the colours are the new bankstown sports club colours. I suspect that they had the ultimate say in the colours of the club. Pretty sure that they have under 12s and quite a few of them.

that's right - Sports were in the process of encouraging their community clubs to change to their new corporate colours, Orange and Blue - something about researchers advising them about certain colours producing subliminal messages that cause Asians to spend more on poker machines ...??? but that's another story!

The greatest asset AFL has is The Sports Club commitment to support the code, which goes back a very long way.

Their challenge is converting school sports day and Auskick participation (mostly ethnic kids), into a commitment to travel all over Western Sydney on a Sunday (Hawkesbury, Wollondilly, Emu Plains, etc), to play in a lopsided competition, when Soccer has 21 clubs playing in divisionalised comps in every age group within a 5 k radius of Kelso Park.

If they get through one season, it takes pretty hard core parents to commit to that for the next 5 or 6 years, when they could go to Wests or Penshurst and play much closer to home in a divisionalised comp ... let's see how they go, and I wish them lots of luck!

Reality says that the travel issue will never change, and was the only reason the club folded.

Nothing was broken - in fact the model has been proven, by the conversion rates to senior football in recent years - yet the AFL decided to fix it.

They will of course conveniently ignore the cost to u/19's football that will now flow.

The AFL knows that they are solely responsible, and they refuse to change, but that's how you do it in Victoria ...

Any chance of a sponsorship tie in with Beer Wine & Spirits? Perfect for an u15s team.

Can someone give me a little history on this Bankstown juniors debacle. I don't understand why the club cannot enter any competition of their choosing. I assume this is not the case?? I know when Gosford seniors chose to play in Sydney that the BDAFL were told no one could force them to play locally. Campbelltown played in the ACTAFL back in the late 90s. If the local organisation are being unreasonably difficult why cant people go over their head?

The narrative ends in 2012, when every volunteer in the area got sick of being lied to and treated like morons, and simply threw their collective hands in the air and moved on.

... it doesn't mention that the subsequent "growth" under GWS in 2013 was NEGATIVE 100%.

The sickening thing is that the AFL and GWS, and even the GWS President were approached directly, and provided with ALL of this data. They were warned of the outcome, and also the backlash that would follow against GWS ... they simply lied to the faces of the volunteers, and proceeded to destroy the successful organisation that was in place.

I know, it is surprising when you consider how successful everything is going with AFL in Sydney, and in particular in Greater Western Sydney ...
