I think it is open slather on poaching or recruiting. NSW AFL certainly don't care. I know the young talent at Manly all got an invitation from North Shore to switch clubs at the end of last year, and a 17 year old Swans Academy player Christain Loone has moved.

This sort of thing used to piss me off, however no one is going to stop it, so good on clubs like North Shore for trying to be better. Ultimately it will drive clubs to provide better programs or $ to attract players. The clubs with poor programs will drop off. Darwin's theory of evolution!

Without $$$$ being involved (and it's not at NS despite the chat), seems players go to clubs because they've got mates who draw them in, they live in the area, they think it will help their footy or they want success.

With us its pretty much been the first 2 - mates and the area. I reckon all our in's this year fit into one those, or a bit of both. Smailes is mates, McConnell is area etc.

Definitely is a bit of cash at some clubs though, but not seeing much movement of players from one club to another because of this?? More affects decisions of players coming into Sydney??

Also, not true that all Manly juniors got an invite from NS. Quite a few Manly players made contact because they weren't happy at Manly, including a couple of juniors I believe, but new coach etc over there so things settled down and they stayed.

Why the question over a handful of players (<5) . Players rarely transfer between clubs in Sydney, in fact the small amount of movement is amazing given the number of players and clubs. From what I have seen when a player leaves a club it is due to a work transfer, a holiday O/S or they stop playing footy!; rarely a transfer to another club.

Why would you let your golden years of football go to waste at a club who can't field a side. North Shore will reap the rewards of their improved junior program over the last 3 seasons.

Exactly! You get good coaches, you win games, the players will come. St George are another club with a fine 19s squad and a very good premier division side.

I think Manly coming into the coming up into Premier Division and winning twice made North Shore develop their club over the last couple years considering Manly did it with a lot of ex juniors of North and their former Under 18s coach. Looks like you need to go down to come up. Penno seem to be the only club that can sustain a strong 19s team and premier in sync over a number of years

Dylan Roos the kid that went to Melbourne or was that Tyler? I thought they were thick with UNSW?

North Shore are doing it very well. However on the flip side sides like Manly are in rebuild so for the younger players there are plenty of opportunities to play prems etc. Of the younger boys, Jarrod Osborne played prems all year, and is now one of the Swans NEAFL under 19s. Sam Wicks, Mitchell Rogers and Evan Kaporis all played prems last year at Manly as 17 year olds. These kids got 15+ senior games into them which is very valuable.

The need to rebuild the prems side meant the under 19s suffered badly with the loss of at least 4 elite senior academy players. The under 19s had one forfeit last year, as I recall, the rest of the time they had 16 or 17 players, so the four missing would have made a huge difference. There were opportunities for boys as young as 15 from the region to play 19s. Lots of those kids are now in the current 19s side.

On the other hand there were quite a few North Shore under 19s who did not get an opportunity to play prems last year. These kids would have got games in prems all year at Manly.

On the other hand they did get to play in an under 19 premiership.

My point is, clubs go in cycles. Manly is rebuilding after one of the most successful periods in the history of the comp including 4 premierships. Rebuilding provides great opportunities for those willing to stick fat with their club and put the work in. A Kid that shifts clubs sideways chasing glory is not generally considered to showing great character.

There is no issue with the Manly coaching program, Michael Ford is a very accomplished coach up from Melbourne, and Leigh Brain is now coaching the under 19s as well as an under 16 Swans Academy coach.

Again, I am not dogging North Shore at all, they have worked bloody hard and deserve every success, but we need some balance.

I stand corrected then! My information was from a couple of parents of 17 year old academy players who didn't get a run. It would not be fair to name them of course! My comments were more about the young players not the true 18/19 year olds, and you are right about those.

My main point was to balance up the debate from Manly's perspective, and thanks for acknowledging that.

With 19's playing Prems I guess the overriding factor should the environment in which their going into and wether or not it will improve their football.

I am sure in many cases U/19's going into a Prems team because they are low on quality players and getting beaten most weeks is going to be a very different learning experience than playing in a winning, well structured team.

If I was an youngster looking for a taste of the big time I know a few games in the winning team is going to be better for my football than a season in a losing team.

Not sure about that one seeing as thought Wicks, Rogers and Kaporis were in the best for the swans last weekend, along with Osborne training with Swans seniors. I know a lot of North Shore Kids are in the same boat but I think many cases is not really this case....there are still plenty quality players at manly mate (Petterson,Robertson,Koch,Brain,Brassil) they did beat north shore last year also, so the above is quite off.

I wasn't specifically referring to Manly, there are a couple of other examples at other clubs were good 19's players have played up in a weaker senior side and haven't kicked on.
But I accept your Manly examples and I guess the result of that is that it should be horses for courses.As you say there are a heap of North Shore younger players kicking around Swans reserves, Syd Uni Nealf and Swans 18's academy, (as well as some who have moved intestate) who I am told most of whom have played some Prems during their development.
Some 19's players thrive in the Prems and others don't.

Dylan Roos apparently locked to play for St George 10 home games with flights covered to fly from Melbourne, could be wrong but this was what was mentioned
