In my junior footy time-keeping days that was always my policy!

I's lay odds there will be a new siren before the next game at Aurora. It would have to be the cheapest part of what they have spent regarding the venue already.

IIRC Manuka also has a p***weak siren.

I suspect so, but that is also not in the rules!

Just took a look at the rules :

                10.4.1: End of Quarter

The Timekeepers shall sound the siren to signal the end of a quarter until a field umpire acknowledges that the siren has been heard and brings an end to play.

10.4.2: Siren Heard by Field Umpire
Play in each quarter shall come to an end when any one of the field umpires hears the siren.

So given that 10.4.1 was not adhered to (i.e. siren was not sounded until the umpie acknowledged) I would say the league cannot possibly let the result stand.

This decision ultimately gave St Kilda the 1909 wooden spoon.
Hmm...we won the premiership in 1909, didn't we? Funny that St. Kilda was involved in that game too...

Incredible stuff. As if last year's St.Kilda-Freo matches weren't exciting enough. Saints won by a point in Launceston last year, and I'm sure everyone remembers Freo's after-the-siren win in Round 21!

If the siren sounds in Tasmania, and the umpires don't hear it, does it make a sound?

Can the Saints actually do that though? is that within the rules of our convoluted system?

The rules of the game have not been complied with hence I think Fremantle have a legitimate legal case. The AFL should also step in and change the result as the rules of the game have not been complied with.

The result will stand BECAUSE of rule 10.4.1 as it states, "UNTIL a field umpire acknowledges that the siren has been heard and brings an end to play". The umpire did not hear the siren and thus play continued. The draw will stand.

You're right, but as I stated the Timekeepers did not sound the siren until the acknowledgement, 10.4.1 was not followed by the Timekeepers. As such Freo should (have) appealed the result and the result should be changed.

I've seen similar situations before, timekeepers usually keep sounding the horn (beeeeeep, sometimes with gaps, beep, beep, beep) until they get the acknowledgement from the umps.
