If they don't find a way to make it happen i.e. Freo win...this competition is a sad farce. Justice must prevail.

This has really got me going. If the absolute rule is that the umpire on the field must raise his hands to complete the game, presumably after hearing the siren...then why aren't they still playing?
Bottom line, reason eventually prevailed, because someone decided (for some other reason than the siren sounding) that the game was over! I wonder what convinced him to stop it?
Bottom line, the siren was lousy, time keeper failed, in his duty to keep it going, but the umpire also failed by not determining whether the Freo players were right in saying the siren had sounded before he bounced the ball. He should have simply made enquiry while he had the clock stopped (admittedly difficult when there is no time on the clock!).
No team should lose 4 or evn 2 points because of such incompetence.
I hope ROK has got it wrong.
Any other ruling but FREO win will be a disgrace.Comment

Yeah but...
If they let it stand what happens in a PF, team 1 ahead by a point, seconds remaining, a ball up is forced at the top of the square but the ruckman has cramped up and is still trying to catch up. Players in team 1 claim to umpire that siren has sounded, please check. Clock stops for 30 seconds while umpire confers with timekeeper and ruckman recovers...Last edited by ROK Lobster; 1 May 2006, 07:32 PM.Comment

Looking at the footage it is clear that the umpires realised they stuffed up. They had a discussion as they walked off. I think they were too gutless to change the decision then and there. To be honest, if they had maybe some feral saints supporters may have lynched them.
I expect the AFL to change the result, saying the game had concluded and they "play" after was not part of the game.I will be a member again when I return.Comment

An argument I heard the other night that hasn't been raised when the rules og the game are brought up is that, according to the rulews also a game consists of four 20 minute (plus time on) quarters. Any play opr score after that time has elapsed could therefore not be deemed to be part of the game, no matter whether the umpires heard the siren or not.
Don't know what anyone else thinks about this one, but it sounds as feasible as the other "rule" arguments.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

ST Kilda's case - Laws say the game ends when the umpire hears the siren.
Freo's case - Laws say the timekeeper shall continue to blow the siren until the the umpires acknowledge they've heard it.Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
