Cal Twomey has his latest form guide up. King at 25 and Kyle at 27. He’s talked up Kyle regularly through the year and even speculates he may be first to be bid on of our academy kids. I assume he has some intel from enough clubs to keep plugging him.

Four players in the top 10 are tied to clubs:
2 Zeke Uwland (Gold Coast Academy)
4 Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast Academy)
5 Daniel Annable (Brisbane Lions Academy)
8 Harry Dean (Carlton father-son)

Much has been posted about four clubs having the top 8 picks, but with these four players likely to attract bids coming in the top 10, these top 8 picks will probably be top 12 picks on draft night.

The draft dynamic will be interesting. The four clubs with the four pairs of top 8 picks may need to make early bids as a way of buying time. The draft isn't a bad draft, but an even draft. There's no obvious draft order, and there could be early draft surprises for the clubs.

This may happen if players like Sullivan Robey (this year's draft bolter) is drafted earlier than Twomey's ranking of 6. He's likely to end up at Richmond (who hold picks 3 and 4), but if West Coast (picks 1 and 2) end up drafting him, Richmond could make multiple bids with their picks. I think West Coast will draft the obvious three top players, though (Duursma, Uwland bid, then CDT).

Our picks will come in three or four positions very early on draft night as GC & Brisbane match top of the draft bids. Be interesting to see which clubs bid early on those Queensland guns.

Queensland and particularly the Gold Coast region has become a massive breeding ground for both AFL and AFLW talent. There's more in the pipeline for both sex next drafts. The new points table is going to make it much more difficult for GC & Brisbane to match top of draft bids now those clubs are likely to only have late teens draft picks at best. Unfortunately both Queensland clubs have been set up list wise for the next dozen years due to the farcical generosity of the previous points table.

The AFL is not very good at equity.

* They changed the rules for bid matching that will come into effect after Gold Coast and Brisbane have three of the top six picks in this year's draft. There is no transitional measure to ensure equity. Essendon is going to have a much harder time recruiting Bewick as a father-son recruit next year.
* They changed the rules to allow picks to be traded two years in the future. They relaxed the rule requiring clubs to use two first round picks in four years to make it a two-in-five rule. They retrospectively gave some clubs a free pass to ignore this rule by pretending they met the rule this year even when they didn't.

Net result: Brisbane and Gold Coast stacked with Academy talent, Geelong able to trade away first-round picks like confetti, struggling clubs like Essendon get shafted.

An additional note regarding Academy and father-son bids this year.

* 10% discount from picks 1 to 18.
* Flat 84 point discount from picks 19 to 36. (84 is 10% of the value of pick 18.)
* From pick 37, points do not apply. Match bids with next pick.

note to thunder shaker the reference u make t changes made to bidding system is over 12 mths old (aug 2024) and I think was changed in sept this year. Cal T has a description of the changes effect on 2024 fs bl for ashcrost and gc for academy Can u check that your refererence is the latest maybe in late sept or in early oct. regards

I have looked on the AFL website but I cannot find a more recent article that summarises all the rules for bid matching in one place. The only article I found provided an example that implied that bids after pick 18 also had a 10% discount rather than a flat discount, suggesting a change was made.

If I can find an article with updated information I will post it.

I thought 10% applied to every points bearing pick this draft. Let's be honest, by the time you're matching in the late 30's, which will be late second round, the points are starting to get fairly insignificant.

This draft we have plenty of suitable picks to match where Twomey is suggesting our academy players may attract a bid. Current picks 31 & 32 could be 27 & 28 within the first half dozen picks in the ND being done with Uwland, Patterson and Annable burning picks before ours.

My best guess is Fremantle. They picked a player with the following draft pick at 21.

The last eight draft picks were:
Pick 16 Western Bulldogs (originally pick 14)
Pick 17 Adelaide (16)
Pick 18 Geelong (19)
Pick 19 Carlton (new pick after matching a father-son bid)
Pick 20 Sydney (matched bid)
Pick 21 Fremantle (20)
Pick 22 Essendon (21)
Pick 23 North Melbourne (22, after receiving this pick in a trade with Hawthorn)

Some picks are missing late in the first round of this mock draft due to bid matching, these are:
15 Gold Coast
17 Brisbane
18 Gold Coast
23 Brisbane

In a real draft, some of these picks are more likely to be traded out for later picks.

That list really needs a name change. Though I type that with a certain amount of trepidation, as I can easily see the AFL handing over a couple of hundred grand to a consultancy firm, for them to come up with the idea, of changing the rookie list to the secondary list.
