Unfortunately we really had no choice. Certainly GWS went out of their way to make it difficult for the Swan.

We delisted Caleb Mitchel this year, who was playing well and has many of the same attributes as Carmichael. Perhaps that cut was made in anticipation of picking up Carmichael, but that more likely to be a bit of a stretch.
I suspect that the go home factor might become more relevant, when there's a significantly larger contract offered, or opportunities in the local real estate market, or Cotton On brand ambassadorship roles.

The recruiters probably did rate Kyle higher, but I think there's a fair chance, that if the bid for Carmichael came first and a bid for Kyle came soon after, then we could have matched Carmichael and let Kyle go.

So you can work all that out from not seeing a guy play, just reading random opinions online.

          Talk about a long bow.

It may be a mistake, it may not be. But its definitely an excuse for another barb at the club - something never missed along the way in your posts.

Curnow although he will be a help mainly in his goal kicking compared to Amartey has had injury problems and Rocas we needed another small forward (i dont think so) with what we already have. Hanily , dattoli ,
papley and perhaps you could classify Cleary here as well.
The Rosas Jnr trade was basically steak knive picks - with very little (if any - sorry not up on latest points scales) points value - 51 had a handful of points and that's it and 69 has zero points value (neither did 62) It really had nothing to do with it all - we could have chosen to go into deficit had we wanted to, but chose not to match.

Quite possibly. It'd be very easy to put together a King highlights package, where he looks like a number one pick, so if he puts it all together, then he'll be seen as a definite draft steal. There's also Bowman, who was possibly taken as a long term replacement for Hayward. Although last season, he did do his best VFL work as a rebounding half back.

GWS started the ball rolling by jumping the queue a few spots to bid on Kyle at 14. They would've seen our initial hand improving as a result of the matching bids in the top 10. We'll keep this in the memory bank, particularly being initiated from a fellow Northern club.

GC decided to match all their bids, but they were all highly rated and not sure if they've gone into deficit.

Noticed Essendon also decided not to match bid on their NGA at pick 25.

Wait and see what happens tomorrow night before making a couch potatoe analysis on how we've fared, but time will be the final judge, particularly with the Curnow trade.
So far the moral of the story seems to be, that if you have a decent academy cohort, than you have to trade out a decent player or two for points, and you'll run into trouble if you don't. Not sure how sustainable that is?

Rookie Me had King rated at 21, Kyle 31 & Carmichael 33. So Kyle and Carmichael were big bolters by their rankings.

Interesting where the bid for King lands tonight and whether we will match. Will be surprised if we didn't.

KPD Blake Thergold is still on the board (ranked 30). If somehow bid for King doesn't come by our pick 35, will we be in a posirion to match bid for King later (with 41, 53, 64) if Thergold is available and we select him? The same applies for any other potential sliders.

Probably too diffiicult to answer surrounding the complexities whether our picks slide further back or forward plus where the King bid lands.

We win some and we lose some- we don’t have a strong hand in this draft so our recruiters try to do their best- let’s not be too critical! The Curnow deal had to be done and I’m hoping he will stay fit and revitalise our attack. Everyone agrees we made a mistake not picking Caleb Serong but no use crying over spilt milk and let’s just look to the future.

It’s encouraging that our Academy is producing exciting talent- this will ensure a great pool of upcoming AFL players who are home grown!

So Curnow cost us Carmichael. That's a price I'm prepared to pay. I like my team taking a gamble with a lot of potential upside.
Of course I knew I could come in here and find that anyone we didn't get was the perfect mix of Buddy, Dusty and Danger and anyone we did get was Dean Towers MkII. I looked at some of the Draft predictions and they said that it looked like we would take King over Carmichael. I wonder/hope that he may have been forewarned.
Let's see how tonight goes - and the next few years before we judge.
However, we can judge that GWS are bastards - I think they'd prefer the Swans to lose to them winning. Their joy in screwing us last night was palpable. On the other hand, the Dogs attempt to do the same didn't work. Their team didn't seem over the moon about getting our man/boy.
                    Onwards to Draft 2025 Pt2.

GWS bid might have been payback for the Swans bidding on Harry Rowston in 2022 but I doubt it.

Not sure how it all sits with what's remaining, dont know enough about any of the kids to know what they are worth.

My only issue is talking about next year's deficit, we start in the mid 30s, if that drops to 50 im not sure why we would care ?

Basically if we could have landed both boys plus King today, who cares if we slide next year ? Different if we had our 1st rounder but from 35 onwards is a roll of the dice anyway

Again, assuming we had the points to do that we have lost LC and 2026 Pick 55 for 2026 Pick 35

If the bids had landed at 16 and 29 as per Twomey's phantom draft, our draft hand would have just landed fine. But we were effectively squeezed out of one of our top 3 academy players. Sad, but that's the way the system works. Even an ex post facto review of how it all turns out can't reflect on the decisions that have to be made at the moment. There's a lot of luck and uncertainty in whole process. We can only hope for the best, with the trades and picks we made this year make us a better side.

When I see the quality of pick ups by Brisbane and GC, it makes a premiership challenge look daunting. Risks have to be taken to put us in serious running. A lot has to fall into place.

As an aside, between the rule changes, their ladder finishes and the fact they haven’t flicked a bunch of picks into next year (like they’ve done on a rolling basis the last few), it’ll probably be the last time GC can take a big haul through their Academy. Unless they agree to trade Humphrey, which they’d be mad to do as he’s a bona fide superstar. We faced the conundrum this year with Carmichael. They’ll face it next, and I reckon Brisbane have squeezed the lemon as hard as they can. GWS are another story, as their Academy is crap.

All of which reinforces the point, the system was starting to spit out players for other clubs. So why the AFL needs to tinker with it again, lord knows. But the VFL will do VFL.

As another aside, I noticed that GWS put out an X-cretion last night, trying to troll us about Carmichael going to the Bulldogs. Can't be bothered finding it and linking to it, but I think their social media people have been doing that sort of childish crap for a while now. I don't know if we ever bother to reply?

Saw it on instagram. We live in there head rent free and they do it for clicks. They’ll never be as relevant as us as a football club even if they win a premiership. So they just do it to leech and build some brand identity cause god knows they don’t have much else
