Every time I watch the VFL team they really struggle to be clean and it ends up being pretty painful to watch - Swans dominated ground and shots on goal in the first quarter but just couldn’t capitalise.

Bowman looks great, which is nice as he’s been anonymous/barley touched it other VFL games I’ve seen. Of worry is McDonald hasn’t done much of notice - but still early in the game. Ladhams looking good in the ruck - clear he's not a forward and should play backup ruck with Grundy in the AFL.

Strange game, in that we were marginally the better side for much of the quarter, but Werribee are in front 4.0 - 24 to 1.5 -11. Wasted some chances and also got in each other's way up forward. Tackling was impressive though, and we're leading the tackle count 30-10. It'd be handy if the umpires were more inclined to pay htb and less inclined to pay in the back or too high.

How bad is Sheldrick! His confidence must be well down, he’s really gone backwards as a player

Well that Qtr was much better - some handy turnovers from Werribee but much better kicking and disposals from the Swans.

Impressed by Ladhams, not so sure about McDonald

Better quarter especially in front of goals - AFL listed players started to have a influence - thought Ladhams was good, Loyd, Edwards and Paton been our best - team tackling has been excellent wish the AFL side could replicate

I thought McDonald was OK and took some nice marks. His kicking for goal was terrible. Held last year's premiers to zero score in the 2nd quarter. Amazing! Such a contrast to their last effort. One thing that stands out is their tackling has been outstanding. Well done Jarad McVeigh. Good to see Edwards and Snell showing a bit of form down back. Ladhams and Shipley probably our best.

What a goal by Ladhams! Get him back in the seniors haha!

Also weird seeing Lachie Hunter in the red and white

Nice to get our first win, but it ended up closer than it should have been. Good of the former academy player, Maguire, to miss the set shot that could have won it for Werribee.

Ladhams was probably our best. Had some important involvements and no real brain fades. Shipley and Ben Edwards weren't far behind. Both were very competitive around the ball. Sheldrick was also competitive, but towards the end of the game, his missed targets were starting to do my head in.

Paton also had a few too many clangers for my liking, but he also set up a few goals by actually hitting targets and was genuinely pretty good. Hunter was fairly useful, but he looked a bit like he's been playing in the sort of league, where a beer at half-time might be acceptable. Snell was handy, while Edwards started well, but looked to me that he may have picked up a rib injury, that restricted his movement.

Buller looks like he's working back to form with three goals, but he does have a habit of spoiling his team mates. Green and McDonald may have had a few more shots, if it wasn't for that. Green was pretty good in the ruck and McDonald had some useful possessions, but more so when working up the ground. Bowman was also handy when working up the ground and had some strong defensive efforts. Lloyd was important to us getting on top, when he bobbed up for a couple of goals in the second quarter.

But perhaps the most important factor to us getting on top, was our tackling pressure in the first half. Couldn't quite keep that up in the second, which allowed Werribee back into it. Still, it's good to get a win and there's plenty to build on, with players who had interrupted preseasons getting back to form.

I read that Hunter is the cousin of the McVeighs. That’s obviously the connection. He was good today yelling lots of instructions to the VFL listed players. An on field coaching role perhaps. Hope he plays more games. Ben Edwards was the star today. A tough character! Hope we can pick him up in the mid season draft.

I had Shipley as our best. He was always there when someone was needed to clear the ball, and his disposal was pretty reliable. But Edwards (Ben) and Ladhams were excellent too.

Sheldrick seems to have lost all confidence with his ability to kick the ball. Every time he had it from a mark (or free), he made as if he was looking for a target to hit up, but then just hoofed it long anyway. And rarely seeming to even be trying to put it to a particular spot, or even vaguely where it might be to the advantage of the forwards. He's no Errol by foot, but he's better than that. Speaking of Errol, he must be pretty bored by now. Maybe some intensive one on one kicking coaching with Angus could do them both good.

Yes, it could largely be a confidence thing with Sheldrick. In that, instead of just seeing a target and hitting a target, he might have unhelpful thoughts popping into his head, like, "can I really make that kick?" and "don't stuff it up". So, maybe some extended one on one practice could improve his confidence? I'm sure that both him and the coaches know that there's a problem with his disposals. Although, if it's more of an issue of him not really being able to process which are the best targets, then it might be more of a problem.

On a more positive note, and even though it's a small sample size, I thought the kicking of Ben Edwards seemed a fair bit better yesterday, than it was last year. That is, I had him rated as a player whose contested work and defensive efforts were really good, but whose scattergun disposals would probably stop him from making it to AFL level. But yesterday I thought his ball use was generally efficient and useful. Hopefully he can keep that up. Which might also be helpful to Sheldrick?

My major concern apart from Ladhams, our best players aren’t any of our afl listed players - what the hell they see in Bowman is beyond me, just don’t see anyone putting there hand screaming give me ago
