Yes, only eight listed players named in the side for the game against Collingwood tomorrow. Although Caleb Mitchell is listed as an emergency. Oh well, I suppose it gives the VFL listed players a good chance to impress.

Hopefully Buller shows a bit - sort of a forgotten player to me.

Just by going through the number of AFL listed players, it's probably going to be a somewhat one-sided affair. It looks like Collingwood have 14 to our 8. We also seem to be missing Ben Edwards, who was possibly our best VFL listed player last season. And Leidler might be continuing the tradition, of having a mystery player who's neither playing or on the injury list.

Competitive first quarter, with the difference being that Collingwood kicked goals with their couple of set shots, while we kicked behinds with our few. Cleary and Shipley getting plenty of ball in the midfield. Francis and Edwards stopping plenty of Collingwood attacks.

Still a competitive game, but both teams are struggling to hit forward targets. Which meant that Francis, Paton, Edwards and Geddes have had plenty of ball in our defence. Cleary has looked classy around the stoppages, while Shipley is leading by example and is the top possession winner with 21. Academy product, Joel Cochran, has been one of the better players for Collingwood.

Collingwood skipped away late in that quarter, with some helpful umpiring. Plus I didn't notice Edwards for the latter half of that term, which meant that our defence seemed more stretched. Hopefully his game time is being managed after his rehabilitation, rather than a new injury.

We did a lot right while doing a fair bit wrong all at the same time.

Caiden Cleary - Will be next cab up for a senior recall
Francis - was his usual VFL self
Edwards (I am. Fan) - but wow for a guy so big he lost so many one ones not so bullish on him getting a game anytime soon
Buller - was our only genuine target and I hope gets a run in the seniors soon
all the rest of our AFL listed players look like slow burns at best

Collingwood ended up winning 84-59. Which was probably a fairly good performance by us, considering a large imbalance in the number of AFL listed players.

Of our AFL listed players, Cleary was probably our best. He had 37 possessions, was elusive in traffic and usually used it pretty well. Green had a decent game in the ruck. Got plenty of hitouts, had some nice follow-up efforts, but was pushed around at times and the umpires didn't seem to like him. Edwards was good in the first half, but is probably short of a run, because I think he only played the first half of the last two quarters. Francis was very good when Edwards was firing, but was less effective when he had to play more as a key defender. Paton got plenty of ball, but had a few too many clangers for my liking; with some of them being punished by Collingwood goals. Kirk also turned it over a bit too much, with dinky kicks that didn't clear the opposition. Up forward, Buller battled pretty hard, but was possibly also short of match fitness. While Bowman did a few classy things, but didn’t get it much and missed a couple of chances that he should have got. Although, they weren't helped by often poor delivery.

Of the VFL listed players, Shipley was our best, and was close to Cleary for best overall. Got plenty of contested possessions, chased and tackled hard, and generally gave the impression that the captaincy meant something to him. Also in the midfield, Harrison had a good second half, with a few useful involvements suggesting that he's up to VFL level. Geddes had a pretty good game as a defensive flanker. While there were a number of others who got a fair amount of ball, but their disposal let them down at times: Endemann, Davis, Hanrahan and Lloyd. Longmire got a couple of goals, but both were gimmes, when people found him free right in front of goal.

So, all up, quite a competitive performance, although we never really looked like winning, with a fair bit to like and a fair bit to improve on. Strangely, we have a bye in round two. But hey, perhaps we'll have a fair few more listed players in round three?

With 37 disposals I think Cleary has put his hand up for senior selection. Bowman drilled a goal from outside 50 and then he missed 2 from almost point blank range. Buller was OK as a target but his goal kicking was poor. Edwards was good early but really faded in the second half and was out marked easily. Francis is a good intercept defender but is poor with one on one duels.Eidermann was handy up forward as was Matthew Lloyd. Will Green was OK in the ruck but needs to do more around the ground. Shipley played a good game in the centre but the rest of the team were very ordinary.

Must've had the same umpires as Friday night's game!

Not quite as bad as the 33-14, but it was 30-18 with a few debatable ones very close to goal.

The team to play North on Sunday has been announced, with a few handy inclusions, with McDonald and Snell coming back from injury lay-offs, Mitchell playing after being AFL emergency, and useful VFL player Ben Edwards; who should bolster the inside midfield, in the absence of the promoted Cleary.

The Swans will clash with North Melbourne on Sunday as both teams look to secure their first win this season.

Could be a fairly tough ask, with by my rough count, North having a 14-10 advantage in the number of listed players, with a number of high draft picks. Wardlaw might be hard to contain in the midfield. But hey, if we can get a reasonable supply to McDonald, Buller and Bowman, then we could kick a winning score.

15-11 advantage with AFL subs Sheldrick and Hardman playing. Good start with goals to McDonald and Lloyd.
