It was almost identical to the one he missed from the same distance out a few weeks ago. He failed to go through any routine at all, didn't concentrate on a correct ball drop, and tried to kick the ball too hard.

If Davis comes back in - this week or later - it will be because he's convinced the club he's ready. It won't be - nor shouldn't be - at the expense of O'Loughlin. There are plenty of others to make way.
It is absolute folly to believe the club will drop MOL.

He might be an absolute Barry Crocker kicking for goal but he sure does create and cause a lot of heartache for opposition backs.

One change: Phillips out, Fosdike in.

the reason you dont drop players like Kirk, O'Loughlin and the like is that they will always have the best defenders and midfilders playing on them. This allows us to play the likes of Grundy, Phillips, Schmidt as they will always be on the third to fourth best players on their line.

i would still like to see matthews, fosdike, davis all return before the finals, maybe not just yet. We will truly be hurt this year by having no second ruckman and will be the reason why we will be knocked out of the finals in the second week.

"Hopefully we'll get a few of our guys back over the next two to three weeks in (Nic) Fosdike and (Jared) Crouch and (Ben) Mathews, and I'll probably add a ruckman at some point, so I think even structurally, and in terms of personnel, we can improve as well."

I interpret that statement as Doyle's return is imminent.

                      Matthews.... ugh!!!!!!!!!!
I thought Roos had finally seen the light with this clown.

Would like to see Davis in this week, but as others have said, wont happen as him not playing this weekend gives Roos a nice excuse for him not to play against bombers.

                      IN: Doyle, Fossie
                      OUT: Richards, Phillips

I think we should try Doyle now, after so long I doubt that he will stand up, but it's better to do it now than in the finals. Essendon are currently playing only 1 ruck so if Doyle is unable to play out the game it will hurt less.

And I'd drop Ted to make way for him. I though Bevan was good (especially his interceptions in the 2nd quarter). I think Phillips, Grundy & Schmidt are worth at least another week (although given his size I think 3 weeks in the seniors may be enough for the former).
And then let's see who in the reserves can force their way in.

Would have been cruel to list Doyle as an emergency if the club had already written him off. Roos' statement just confirms it. Couldn't agree more, too, that it would be very poor thinking to ask him to come up against the Dees without a game under his belt.

The guy dropped for him should not be Richards, though, but Grundy. We need to test the look of Doyle in the forward line when not on the ball. Richards is a genuine utility to have on the bench; Grundy (despite his experience down back) is not, yet.

And I noticed one other thing, too, on Saturday night, sacrilege though it might be to some: Schmidt is just another midfielder, for gawsakes, the sort of which we already have at least a dozen. He may become a stalwart of the club by 2008/9 when the current senior midfield group is heading towards retirement; but he's not the messiah.

I almost guarantee Doyle will play this week. This is the perfect game to try him out against lowly opposition. Not to much pressure, and will really expose Essendon if Solomon is full back again.

Come on Roos, do something for the fans.

What? Aside from take the team to a flag?

I do agree that Essendon is the perfect opportunity to give Doyle some game time, especially as a lead in to the Melbourne game.

I can't believe that you'd advocate the inclusion of Richards on the basis that he's a utility. He's soft as butter and has not played one decent game this year to indicate that he is good enough to play AFL at senior level
