Why is the Syney crowd so passive?

I?ve finally worked out the reason why the Sydney crowd is so passive.

On Saturday night I went to the Dragons v Storm match: the crowd made heaps of noise, but a major difference from a Swans crowd was about 50 pts in an IQ test. We were sitting on Strathfield station after the match and watched as the northern based Dragon fans piled on to the Newcastle train. It was ?all aboard? the bogan express.

Ausiie Rules in the southern and western states covers the entire society. In Sydney it doesn?t. Is a @@@@carter going to spend his time at the footy discussing his chance of promotion or yelling for his team? Go fish.

The answer is easy ? The Budgies and Crows give it. If you want a loud crowd, get ferals as your fanbase. JF, please take note.

    Very true.

But as many others have mentioned it was also the 'hate' factor for the opposition. Imagine if St Kilda won through to the Preliminary. There would have been 10,000 more in attendance and the crowd would be much more involved.

But would we want bogans asa apart of our supporter base? And if so they are generally the most loyal to League even if they aren't loyal to their teams.
That's the problem with modern day medicine - there's no more natural selection of the species.
No wonder there's so many Collingwood fans.

A Sydney born friend of mine who came to the game on Friday night again remarked on the difference in the crowd as opposed to an NRL game. My theory is that a significant number of Swans supporters are 'migrants' from the southern states who moved to Sydney to live and work. Many are professional, middle class. They just arent quite as feral and rowdy. But they will get going if the margin is minimal eg the Geelong SF last year. On Friday night I was probably the loudest in the area where we were sitting, evident by my still croakey voice. Sometimes they joined in, sometimes they didnt. But I would never log on here the next day to bitch about them, tell them how they should support the team or threaten to give up on my beloved Swans just because they arent feral loudmouths at the footy like me.

(ORB: I'm hoping Wardy, Aussie Ange, you, and my trio are all sitting near each other on Saturday - that'll be loud and feral! )

Hey ORB are you trying to imply that I have a low IQ or that I'm not loud at the games? (I wouldn't class myself as feral but the woman in front of Wardy might).

I think that one of the Homebush match night themes next year should be "Back to being boguns". We all turn up in black Megadeath t-shirts. Only Toranas & motorbikes with "No fear" emblasoned on them allowed in the car park. Trackies are to replace designer jeans. And immitation rat tails can be purchased at the souvenir stand for $5 dollars ($1 for Health Care card holders) Beer is served in cans. Empties are chucked at opposition players. There will be none of this @@@@y "Cheer Cheer" stuff. It will be Akadaka all the way. Women should be discouraged from attending; especially those white collar executive types who wear red jackets and bring tea and biscuits for half time.

I read on Dockerland that we were the nicest most polite 60000 crowd they have ever been to.(Probably the only one, for that matter.) Part of me is pleased by it. But part of me is kind of depressed. A Sydney match is not the fortress it once was (ie 1997). We are just too well-manored, too nice, too gentlemantly/lady-like.

Still, we can't change peoples habits. We got 60000 to a home final against Freo. Another GF win is the way to get more and more through the gates.

But beating the "Shush" culture you get at the SCG these days appears to be a fighting battle to be honest.

I went to the Storm game too, and I was surprised at the decent atmosphere. That said I was embarresed to among that crowd. Amongst such a group of idiot bogans I have not been before.

I thought the crowd was quite loud i'm not sure what everyone is complaining about. It was the loudest swans game of the year. The main thing was a lack of well coordianted Sydney chants.

Ange, we played reasonably well and (for once) the maggots were OK. You should know that what fires me up the most is bad umpiring.

I thought the umpiring was good, except for the elbow into Hall's face which was deemed to be holding the ball.
A few Freo fans reckon they got the rough end of the stick, but hey're just sore losers.

With Sydney crowds there is always going to be that "event" rent a crowd element to major matches.
Unfortunatly the football culture in Sydney only extends to the Rugby League which despite getting generally less than the Swans at the SCG/Telstra have more atmosphere in most cases.

The atmosphere at Homebush Stadium is awful, especially when there are lots of new supporters who have no feel for the game. It is great to have their support and I hope they continue with it, but it means that it is very difficult to start a chant etc. The best atmosphere at Homebush Stadium was earlier this year against teams like Geelong and Collingwood, when there were lots of die hard fans (ie, mostly members). Then the crowd found their voice and the chants went really well.

Agree. The place sucks up atmosphere like a black hole.
