Seriously.. Why Aren't we considering Gardiner above Everitt??

Look I'm all for a quality ruckman, (Noth that Jolly & Dolly aren't). But it seems to me that paying a bomb for, and potentially trading away a few draft picks for a guy, although good in his day, is on the verge of retirement.

Why aren't we discussing Gardiner??? Surely if anyone can reform him, we can??

I think we should have a look at Gardiner. He is a co-ordinated big man who can run which is what we want yes he has had a bad attitude over the last couple of years but I think getting him out of Perth would do wonders for him also with the way we are able to keep our guys on the track his injuries might not be a factor.

Gardiner has problems with pubs shutting at 10pm in Perth. Imagine if you let him loose at the Bourbon at 4.30am on any given night of the week in Sydney.

He's not used to staying up and drinking that late. Sydney's too evil for him. Too many bad "lifestyle" choices to make.

It'd be like finding a kid who has never tasted sugar, giving him a spoonful, and then sending him to Willy Wonka's for the arvo.

IF he comes here, he knows (as well as probably every other player in the comp) that our "self-imposed player rules" are very, very strict. One step wrong and he'll be playing out his contract in the reserves. Very, very expensive gamble (and not just in monetary terms).

To take a gamble like that ... mmmmmm ... very, very risky

As for Everitt, as much as I love him to death, he's getting a bit old in the tooth for my liking.

As a quick aside re Everitt, isn't he off contract at Hawthorn?

If someone is off-contract, why would we be offering a bloody pick to a club that "doesn't own" him in the first place??

Because if you don't get him via a trade, he either re-signs, or has to go in the preseason draft.

Of course, if you have an early PSD pick, don't deal, and get the player that way. If there are, for example, 14 other clubs ahead of you, then trading is a way of doing away with the gamble that they are still available when it is your turn.

What's to stop the club putting a non-performance clause of sorts in a contract? I.e. ANY indiscretions and he's out on his bum, immediate contract termination, no payout etc etc etc. Leaves the ball in his court - if he signs he knows what he's in for, and if he doesn't, well we know he doesn't want to be an AFL footballer. If he does sign and buggers up, all it means is that we terminate his contract immediately and elevate a rookie to the senior list.

All hypothetical of course, but there are ways to minimise the risk if a player like Gardiner were being considered. Potential risk but ways to make a return somehow with minimal loss if it doesn't work out.

With spida it may not be so easy to do that, therefore meaning a higher financial outlay intitially, and then ongoing for no guaranteed return. At least with Gardiner it's behviours in question rather than potential physical weakness/incapability due to injury.

There are serious problems with even considering a player who was dropped to Claremont during the pre season and told by Worsfold that he wouldn't be back until his attitude improves and then gets behind the wheel drunk as a newt.

Plus he was @@@@house in the 2005 grand final.

If Gardiner ends up in Sydney (and there's no evidence we are even remotely interested) then I will consider tearing up my membership card.
