However, I still wonder whether the coach should look ahead a bit earlier and make changes a bit quicker.
Knowing when the right time to start ringing the changes is one of the easiest things in hindsight and one of the hardest in real time, I reckon.

And a lot of Roos' approach is based on instilling confidence in fringish players and letting them have their spot in the team without worrying about getting dropped (eg B2, Teddy). I realise this isn't applied universally but once a player is more or less established, it appears to be the philosophy he's applied.

I'm not trying to argue whether that's right or wrong - except that when you have the runs on the board (as Roos does over the last couple of seasons) it is a brave person to tell him he's wrong. Or to know exactly when a change of tack is the right answer.

      I don't disagree.

This has had a great effect at building confidence, but over the long term it means that their positions aren't threatened, which can lead to complacency.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

"[T]here are things that matter more and he's reading and thinking about them: heaven, reincarnation. Life and death are the only things that are truly a matter of life and death. Not football."

Yep, and it can be a fine balancing act between them. It possible also comes down to knowing the individual players and how they will respond. Which might be why someone like Schneider - who doesn't appear to lack natural confidence - has received a kick by being dropped, while someone like McVeigh has the faith kept in him in the hope it may turn his confidence around.

McVeigh showed us last year he can play. Had he managed to sustain a career playing at last year's level he wouldn't have been a star but would have been at least a handy player, especially in good teams. He's just gone so far backwards this year that you have to wonder what is going on with him.
