no-one carried on AGAINST the swannies ... just encouraging them to move the ball FORWARD in the hopes that we can get another goal. Last time I checked, it was all about kicking the ball between the big giant two sticks at the end of the ground - doesn't matter how ahead you are (... it's noice to stick in the knife in a bit further sometimes).

In a low scoring game I doubt the Swans would have kicked many more, but St Kilda's last hope would have been a quick counter attack kicking long to Reiwoldt one out.
Also, keep in mind the fatigue of the players and it's understandable why they'd take the foot off."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

Seriously, the idea that we would bomb the ball into a forward line crowded with St Kilda players is ludicrous. Any quick turn over could have cost us big time. The possible gain of a few % points is NOT worth risking a win. To say otherwise makes you sound very silly.Comment

As for the "flooding", maybe we should take a digital camera to the next game and take a photo every time the opposition forward line is empty (and a photo of our forward line showing all the "numbers behind the ball").
It might also be worth comparing this to Hurricane Katrina again, with all the black people "looting" stuff and the white people "finding" it. It makes the point really well I have found."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

After watching last nights game, can we finally hand over the mantle as the "flooding" team of the comp????
I mean seriously, StKilda had the flood from hell going on and yet even listening to the commentary not once did they say "flood" in reference to StKilda.... Only us.... they were "pushing numbers back"
Seriously getting the @@@@s with this biased commentating...
There is a lot of jealousy thrown at any team who wins a flag. Because in place like Melbourne there are people whose clubs have never won anything who take jealousy to the point out sourness and at times outright hostility.
Had we not won the flag we'd not be copping the barbs. Still I'd rather be copping the barbs we got post-flag than the ones that are being cast at West Coast this season.

On Saturday night, it was obvious that Sydney was manning up while St Kilda wanted to go with a loose man in defence.
The result was that when Sydney were held up they were forced to kick sideways (i.e. fat side) and wait until gaps appeared. This will always be the case and the flaw is clearly that such a strategy only works while the passes are hitting targets without pressure because turnovers are death.
The opposite is when a player kicks down the line to a player who can play on immediately and break a line, and kick deep to a leading forward in one on one contest. e.g. Jude Bolton on the members side when his direct opponent (Fisher) slipped in final quarter.
My observation is that teams such as West Coast, Collingwood, especially at Telstra, Hawthorn and Geelong are more prepared to take the risk of playing on in 50-50 situations, thereby if successful, breaking the loose man in defence and the flooding tactic, by running through the lines. If tackles fall off or are broken they succeed, if they get caught they tend to have support to dish off to and start again.
Our strategy has been to to tackle well and run them down by the end of the game. We don't have the speed in the mid-field to run away from opponents and create but we do have the grunt to stick tackles and this is where we are playing to our strengths.Comment

Our forward line was really very crowed from the centre bounces too, which we would normally try to avoid, so from that I would deduce that they kept sending players back to create a free player, and we manned up, crowding our forward line.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment
