At the end of the day, history is not going to remember Brett Kirk.
History will remember a dual-brownlow medalist though.
Maybe not the rest of the opposition supporters but the Swans supporters will always remember Kirky as well as Goodsey.
Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

Possibly the dumbest comment to date. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were being sarcastic.

I almost can't believe the complete lack of respect you have for Kirk and what he's done for this club.

I get the feeling that kirk will one day coach the swans. I don't know and i doubt if he will be good at it..but i don't know thats the hunch i get.

Kirk won't simply retire and thats that. He will be around the club for some time yet.

Annie, you talk of "Inspiration" and how little Kirk (in your opinion alone) has done to inspire, tell us what Goodes has done to inspire the team.
Don't get me wrong, I think Goodes (when on song) is a magnificent footballer and a joy to behold, but it's his natural ability, he does the things he does because he can. Goodes has ten times the natural ability that Kirk does.
Don't you think that a true inspiration is someone who had to battle to get to the top of the tree, someone that the young ones can look up to and say "Wow, if he can do that, I can do that".

Copping the bump isn' t inspirational ,its what he does after wards that makes it great. All those people that Pickett knocked into next week, does that make them inspirational? IMO no.Kirk IMO is inspirational when he goes in hard and gets up and when he gives those great speeches to the boys to get them fired up,now thats inspirational .

This is like 1 vs 100.

There are a number of things that make a great captain.
The biggest one is leading by example.

Kirk without a doubt is the player that does this at Sydney. He is the one player that stands for everything that is the modern Swans.
Always hard at the ball. Puts his body on the line EVERY TIME. Does his job EVERY TIME. Lifts the team with moments of inspiration, whether it be the unexpected goal or taking a hit and getting back up.

The arguement that should be mounted really, is: Do Hall and Leo still lead by example? In Hall's case, I would say no. Can be undisciplined, and does not always do what is required.

Kirks should be captain until he retires, or decides to step down. He is the heart and soul of the Sydney Swans, and shows everyone else how it is done.

                    Some stats:
In 16 games this year Kirk has amassed 20 possessions or more. Two of those games produced over 30. (and leads the Swans in this category)

In 4 games this year Kirk has completely 10 tackles or more, with a high of 13. He leads the Swans, and the competition with 142 tackles (with a margin of 11 to the next player).

Interesting to see who wiggles Kirk's head around after the incident in an example of exactly what not to do with a football injury.
Actually, making sure the guy isn't choking on his tongue is the first thing you do, then worry about neck injuries. So Goodesy did the right thing in this instance.

Just to throw another side of the argument into the mix

Making Goodesy captain could be the worse thing for him...it could actually work to stifle his natural skills.

He has more free rein than other players...can go where he wants to go etc. This doesnt naturally sit right with leading by example because if everybody followed suit it would be chaos.
