Just to add a few more comments on Playfair, they had Bomber Thompson on the radio after the draft and he indicated that they wanted to retain Playfair as they see beleive he is good enough to play as a KP Defender in the AFL but with Egan, Harley and Scarlett that he was just not going to get a chances at this stage unless injuries occured.

He didin't want to see him go but them's the breaks.

I went down and watched the VFL GF live (around the corner and nothing to do) and was most impressed with Playfair cast a defender role. Like most tall guys who look a bit ungainly and are not natural players they tend to play their best when given simple tasks.

I think Playfair as a KP Defender could work very well for us.

There was a fair bit of that going around this trade week.
There's been a fair bit of nonsense written about clubs being 'considerate' in trades, in light of the Steven King trade, as if this was a great virtue. The question is: considerate to whom? Considerate to a bloke who will have nothing to do with us from this day on, for the rest of his career, quite possibly. But only by allowing him to choose which club he'd play for; he'd be playing for some opposing club one way or t'other. And very considerate to an opposing side, who we have to finish on top of to win the flag, sure. Somehow, not so considerate to the club whose interests you're supposed to be representing, and the club's fans who would like to see each outgoing player replaced with an incoming player/draft pick of equal value and quality.

Based on 2007 performances, this doesn't quite look like the core of a championship team.
And yet, 3 of those 4 blokes are premiership players! Whether LRT, NOG, Bevan, Mathews, Nic Fosdike, Schneider, Buchanan and Jude Bolton could have been considered the 'core' of a premiership team at the start of 2005, is a moot point. They were all part of the side that did the job. Gardiner is neither here nor there; a fair-sized warm body as part of a 38-man squad, for depth. But the idea that King, Schneider and Dempster are all mediocrities incapable of playing their part in a flag-winning side is, ahem, interesting.

The way that Adelaide supporters have been abusing the coaching staff about putting Mattner in defence, i agree he should be our winger.

I thought pure wingers were more or less obsolete nowadays. And even if they're not, there's not a huge amount of difference between an attacking HBF and a wingman. Crows fans' objections seemed to be based on Mattner being stuck in a backpocket.

Every post I've read defending the Playfair ('Dirtyboy') trade, cast him as a defender. Which, given his recent success at VFL level, makes sense.....
The problem is Roos has said ,very clearly, that he will play him as a forward... "To help out Hall,MOL and co". He has shown very little, over 3 seasons, on the cats forward line. He is a slow lumbering type, and his second efforts are lamentable. Anyway, don't we have Spida and Jolly for that role ??
Seems strange Roos wouldn't try him in defence first..

Roosy has stated that he will play Playfair in the forward line not in the backline so Tiger will remain in the HBF posistion and Melcho will move to the midfield. .My mistake i thought you ment that Mattner would take over the roles of Tiger and or Melcho in the HBF positions.

Egan missed the last three games, your comments would have more weight if they elected to bring in another defender but they didn't. Instead they played another midfield rotation due to match up reasons.

So yes Playfair was seen as the fourth tall defender at the club behind Scarlett, Harley and Egan.
