In reading some of these posts... And there's far to many to read them all.... I'd have to say that Benny and the WCE have had their chances and blown it. Yeah he should be looked after because he has an illness, but clearly the softly, softly approach has failed.

Time to try an alternative tact on both Cousins & the WCE.

I get no pleasure from his misfortune, but at the same time, he has only himself and those around him to blame. Same for the club in general. They've both had their oppurtunities to make good their errors/mistakes and now they find themselves in an even worse position, which is hardly surprising given the very nature of drugs and addiction.

Bottom line, I think sympathy and empathy for both parties has begun to dry up.

Not an unreasonable view and certainly a far cry from the glee and pleasure in his reversion to drug taking.

Tall poppy syndrome is an ugly facate of the Australian psyche and the fact you take pleasure in it reflects very badly on the sort of person you are.
Sure does. To me, tall poppy syndrome means that you are no better than me. If you think you are better than me, you'd better watch your back. When you step out of line, you will be cut down. Cousins thought he was everything, when clearly, he's not.

Again, what my reflection looks like to you is totally irrelevant. I will still sleep tonight. By the sounds of it, you won't. You don't know me - you can't judge what sort of person I am at all. Ask someone who's actually met me what type of person I am.

That's not what tall poppy syndrome is at all

Firstly, I dont think ben Cousins is a member of the Animal Liberation Front.

More importantly, again, you have no idea, which is why you are asking the question.

Best if you just stick to gleefully gloating rather than trying to speculate on things you have no idea about.

You are clueless, as you have always appeared. Keep up the good work on that front as you provide no "substance" to your matter. However, you may be suggesting we break out the violins and take up a collection for the poor fellow.....

                          Glad you brought it up.

They should strip him of his Brownlow as well.

"It has been said that the tall-poppy syndrome stems from feelings of jealousy. Presumably then, every Australian who has failed to achieve their dreams on the sports field now secretly harbours a desire to pull out a crow bar and break the legs of the country's sports heroes. The only problem with such a presumption is that most of the criticism of Australia's sports heroes emanates from people who are not sports orientated. It would seem odd that people who do not play sports would jealous of sporting success. "

This phenomenon is often interpreted by foreign observers as a resentment of others' success. Those who subscribe, however, see themselves as attacking targets which take themselves too seriously or flaunt their success without due humility. Apparent cases of tall poppy syndrome can often be explained as resentment not of success but of snobbery and arrogance; many Australasians have achieved success and wealth without attracting such hostility, such as Dick Smith and Stephen Tindall.

In modern Australasia, tall poppy syndrome is frequently invoked as an explanation when a public figure is on the receiving end of negative publicity ? even if such publicity can be seen as a result of that person's own misconduct.
